Axle swap...

I'll be swapping axles on my truck this weekend. Was wondering how hard this is? Anybody have any basic instructions, do and don'ts of doing this. I will be swapping in a set of 5 lug axles for the six lugs....

Thanks,,,,,Rob

Re: Axle swap...

I pulled a diff carrier once (almost 20 years ago) and should be the same steps.

Axle length changed sometime in 1970. Newer trucks were about 1/2" longer each side. There is a post about using newer 5 lug in older axle housings. I saw it a few weeks ago but now can't find it.

Basically:
1. Make sure the truck is secure on jack stands. Double check (safety first).
2. Obviously wheels and drums have to come off. May have to knock out a plug in the backing plate to back off the brake shoes if there is a groove in the drums.
3. Drainpan under diff cover and drain fluid/take off.
4. Remove cross shaft bolt and cross shaft.
5. Push the axles inward for access to the c-clip. It may fall out if you rotate the axle or you may need a partner to help it out.

Hope I didn't forget anything.

Edit:
I did forget that you install in the reverse order. Should recommend replacing at least the seals and probably the bearings while you have the axles out.
