292 to 454 swap info please

Hey all. I'm looking into changing my 292 (with manual trans) out to a 454. The donor truck ('78 1/2 ton) has an auto trans but I'd like to keep my 4-speed. Has anyone done this? TIA

Greg

What are you gonna do with the 292?
I'm interested in the sheemetal: Valve cover, Timing gear cover, side/lifter panels and oil pan. That is you don't have any plans for the motor.

Oh to get motor to sit right use 68-71 or 72 BB towers, and use all the brackets and pullies off 454 it will be LWP so youll need to make some wires longer, your alternator will now be on the pass side, unless you buy the short pump stuff.Heres what a typical short pump conversion consists of
1.fan shroud
2.towers
3.ps pump and brackets
4.alt brackets
5.pulleys etc. I have most all of this available, but youd be saving ALOT if you went with the long pump stuff,i have all that to,if you need any.

thanks

Souns like this swap isn't all that bad; it's my first time tryng to change engines around so it should be a learning experience for sure. Thanks for the info. As for my 292, the truck ('69) is manual steering so no PS brackets, sorry and I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do with the engine once I have the 454 in there. I may plop it into the '78 and sell that as a complete truck but I guess if there was interest in buying it.....

What about locating the engine? (I'm still a few months away from actually doing this swap but I'm trying to get some homework in now.) And as for a source for the '72 mounts (I assume the ones in the '78 are no good to me) can I just scoop them from a wrecker or am I better of getting new ones/ should I grad poly ones if they're available?

Again, many thanks, you guys rock

Greg

BTW thanks for the offers Desert Rat, I'll keep you in mind if I need stuff

oops

sorry...the last part of my previous post might've been a little confusing. By location the engine, I mean locating it in the engine bay. Should I just get a cherry picker and loewr it into place, bolt it (temporarily) to the tranny and mark where i need to put the mounts? What about making the switch from 454+auto to 454+manual? Any trouble there?

Thanks again

Greg

The bell housing crossmember is different for the 6 cylender trucks and will have to be changed. It also is located in the wrong spot and is shaped different where it rivets to the frame, so you can't just move the crossmember you already have. You will also need all new bell crank and related hardware and new front driveline half of the driveline. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

good point, reason why is different is cuz 6 cyl motor mount frame trees are taller, IE the spot fo rthe motor mount pad to sit o them is situated up higher than on SBC trees.

292 is a different story again, one is short and one is tall on 292 engines and one is in forward holes and one is in back holes

good luck

again, thanks for the replies. It sounds to me that it would be easiest to swap the driveline into the '69 (454 AND auto trans) since I need a different crossmember and clutch setup anyway. Hmmm....how badly do i want the 4 speed....

Are there interchange manual for this type of stuff?

Will the towers out of 73 up bolt into 67-72 trucks? My 67 also had a 6 banger and I'd to put a BB in it,but the towers and mounts have got me a little confused.I planned on useing 73 up parts .Will they work?
