Sage cage advice
I have been looking into the available cage kits for 1st. gens. So far it looks like your best bet is to fab your own design. But that's not in my deck of cards. Company's like S&W , CSC, etc. make kits but so far I don't know which way to go. Right now it look's like the 10 point cage from S&W is the way to go. Just the welding and install will cost as much as/or more than the cage kit and shipping combined. Any help/pic's out there guy's? Along the same lines are rock sliders that tie into the frame and bumpers.

Someone else will chime in with first hand experience - I don't have any experience with cages but keep reading good things about S&W.

We fabbed mine, not hard really, just takes pattience. You might do well with a kit though because it will probably save you on tubing costs. I would stick with 120 wall DOM over chromolly... less critical on welding requirements. If you decide you HAVE to have chromolly, TIG it for sure. (Heck, Id tig it anyhow) If you dont weld, you ought to be able to find a board member that knows how to weld that would help you out.

Hey, anybody got any pic's of your cages? I really need some help here! VT has helped me a lot with his sage advice. I have to get this cage setup so I can move on with this resto. I will try to post some pic's of my rig, and start a new thread when I start the actual wrenching. Let's go!

One of our local painters does a lot of custom work, I'll stop by and ask him if he is interested in fabing a role cage. I'm going to stop by anyways to check out a 72 K5 that he is doing some sheet metal work on. Although, it would be quite a drive for you, these guys are really good.

Just stopped by to say hey,I'm over in Frederic just north of Grayling...I actually purchased my 70K5 from someone in Marion that runs out west once in a while...will be looking to do same cage setup so will keep an eye on this one...good luck finding someone...I'll ask around ...

OK, I'll play the dummy....what does "sage" mean?
Heres a shot of my home fabbed cage. It might not be the prettiest with the top off, but I like the "tallness" of it for getting in and out. PLUS I got it for only $40 from the PO, a welder who was parting out his 1st gen.

This a S&W 10 point. Did not use it all-also tied it into windshield-no sag with top off.

Wow, thank's jhow66. Your photo album really helps a lot. Album 3. Still couldn't see how it ties into the windshield though. Really like the look of your cage, just how I want mine. Those bars behind the seats, do they mount directly to the body? And do your mounts all go to the frame, or just mount to the body? I think I'll order a S&W cage kit now. Later, K5 to stay alive!
