Post 67 vs 68-72 4wd frame. What the difference?

I'm ready to buy headers for the BB in my 67 4x4. Obviously, no header manufacturer will list headers for this because they did not offer big blocks until 68. Is the 67 frame different and if so, will it have any affect on header clearance. I would rather not run block hugger headers if I don't have to.

Thanks for any help from you guys (or gals) that would know.

not sure but i think maybe even though 4x4 had no BB they stil made the bent up endges near engine mounts for when BB were installed, all a blazer frame is is a pickup frame shortened, nothing else different except at rear bumper, technically 64-up are all same in all actuality, only changes were at bumoer ends of rails and at the steering box part of frame

good luck

Does the BB sit in the same spot on a 2wd as it does on a 4wd? BBs were not available in 4wds between 67 and 72. That could pose a problem if you are trying to use headers for a 68-72 2wd and the block is not in the same spot on your 4wd.

cant say for sure if engine sits in same place on 4x4 as in 4x2, because well 4x4 use a totally different engine cradle and different holes and everything.,

Well, some header manufacturers do list headers to fit 68-91 4wd 396-502. This is great if there is no difference in frame clearance from 67 to 68. The header that they list wil also fit 2wd from 68-87 pickups, blazers and subs. Hedman and Hooker are a couple that show them for these applications. Just gotta zero down whether or not my 67 frame is any different from the firewall forward.

Impster, Fast & Jims

Thanks for the help. Saves me from gambling on a set of headers then having to return them.

It's getting ceramic headers and Flowmasters (Delta 50 series). Should be done in a couple weeks. Thanks again for your help!

Even though the BB was not used in 4wd's from 1968 forward all frames 2wd or 4wd had a notch cut out of drivers side frame rail on top for clearance of BB exhaust, your 67 frame will not have this and unless you buy the tubes and custom make your headers or luckily find a set that can clear frame as it is you will need to notch the frame in this location. Since they were never any made specifically for these trucks with 4wd and BB I would look at a set of shorty headers with a rear exit as they should best suit your needs.

Impster, after I get done spending money on this project, and my 2wd project, I'll send you what I have left over (hehehehe).

GMCPaul, thanks for the good info. The way my truck is setup now, I have plenty of clearance on the drivers side for exhaust, however, the person who did the install of the BB in my truck before I bought it had notched the upper rail of the frame on the passenger side to clear the stock exhaust manifold. That is my major concern at this point. What your opinion on the shorty style header like for the Chevelle? Something half way between a full length header and a block hugger header. If I can get away with the half length headers, I would rather do that that run the block huggers.

I'm going with mid lenght headers when I do put my BB in the Blaz. As it sits now with the SB and full lenght headers. The guy who did the 2 1/2" exhaust had to do a hard 45 degree bend right after the collector on the drivers side so he could go above the t-case crossmember. With mid length this would be a much easier bend and wouldn't crimp the pipe so much. I've heard that headers for a early BB Chevelle are the ones to get

Leroy, have you seen these mid-length headers installed in our Chevy's with a BB? Or do you know of anyone who has used them? A little confirmation would be great before ordering. Any help would be appreciated.
