Last minute Sunday night - TO Bearing problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey all need some quick help,
All day work around the house - last few before dark, changed the throw out bearing - 72, 6 cylinder - I CAN NOT get the tranny back up to the bell housing - only 4 bolts - hangs up about 1 1/4" - I tried up, down, side to side, lower front, raise front, same on the other end - now have clutch pedal engaged (pedal depressed and held in with block) - even tried two bolts in bottom holes taking up any slack - didn't want to force so I stopped - Any help much appreciated (and the mosquito's are coming!!!!)

Turn the tail shaft on the tranny , sounds like the splines aren't lined up between the tranny and clutch

Been trying that also - it didn't seem to make any "clicking" noises like it was almost catching.... I'll do it some more - any more ideas? I found two posts where guys used long bolts and just kept going around tightening them.... I'm afraid that might break something.....

Sounds like you haven't got the input shaft aligned with the crankshaft.Did you use an alignment tool when you pulled the tranny?It keeps the clutch disc splined hole centered with the crank hole for the input shaft.
That's the first thing that came to my mind.I did my first many years ago and did not know to do this.I spent 2 days on a simple job.

Did you dry fit the bearing before instolling ?

Use floor jacks if need be, and get the engine and trans as perfectly lined up as possible. If they don't go straight in, or with a slight twist, something is wrong. Get the trans out of the way, and look in to see if the clutch disk is somewhat centered with the pilot bearing.

Take your time getting it perfectly lined up. I've had them be a real PITA, and the next time, they fall together.

Yup. Pull them back apart a few inches, insert your clutch alignment tool, then release the clutch pedal and leave it that way. If you don't have your tranny's input shaft there to hold the disk in place and you release the pressure plate, the disk will fall down and you won't be able to put it back together.

If you don't have the long bolts to make 'rails', you can still insert the lower bolts to get an idea of your alignment and then just measure the distances all around to make sure you're going in straight.

I called my dad - it's been 20 years since he's worked on one - I had to have it done before dark - he said "crank it over" and the try again... I hesitated, but said wth and did it - I got back underneath picked it up off the jack and it slid in.... done!
