This is going to be fun.

well, i've noticed occasionally that my truck would leave a little fluid trail. I thought it was just antifreeze since my radiator has a leak. Then today i notice that there's basically a flood of fluid.

4 hours later, my dad and I deem it's a front pump seal. sO with the truck on ramps and a chip seal driveway, I get to drop the T400 and the 10 feet (or whatever a crew cab LWB driveshaft measures to) of driveshaft, with only a floor jack.

The hard part is finding wheel chocks since the E-brake doesn't work worth a quarter of a penny.

And tips that my dad might not reveal to me?

The only tip I can give, think safety, safety, safety. Make sure that big truck doesn't fall on you.

I've been there done that with the jack did it once and vowed never again. If you haven't already started take the motor and tranny out together through the top its just way to hard from underneath unless you have a tranny shop.

Re: This is going to be fun.

well, we have the back tires in the air now and I have the convertor and starter unbolted and ready for the back segment of the DS to come off.

Something that caught my dad by surprise- a 5 bolt flexplate and a fixed yoke. Are these part of the camper special package with the 4.10's and factory engine oil cooler? My dad said all the 400's he's had in his full bodies and camaro's were all 3 bolt slip yokes.

Re: This is going to be fun.

hey, just a little tip for ya....you can turn your floor jack into a tranny jack really easy....find an old fly wheel, (i made mine with a flywheel from a 6.2 diesel) and then find a pin that will fit in the same hole that the jack pad is already in.....then weld that pin into the center hole on the flywheel...(you might have to make the center hole a little bigger so that the pin can fit through it because you'll want it welded on both sides of the flywheel) and then after doing that find a short chain (about 2.5 or so feet long) and bolt it to one of the holes for the torque converter....and there ya go....i've used mine for years and on just about any tranny you can think of and never had a problem

well both DS's are out, crossmember is unbolted, 2 bolts are out of the block mount. Gonna drop the pan tomorrow and maybe hit the upper two bolts on the block.

Re: This is going to be fun.

what pan are you dropping? You pull the tranny with the pan on, or else you'll damage the valve body. Obviously drain as much fluid as possible before yanking tranny out, but put the pan back on before trying to lift it.

Re: This is going to be fun.

yea we're gonna drop the pan to drain the fluid (have to with the cooler lines) then put it back on to drop the trans.

anybody know about the 5 (or maybe 6?) bolt flexplate/convertor and fixed yoke?

Re: This is going to be fun.

ain't the flexplate always held by 6 bolts? That's how my 350 is, and quite frankly I'd be a little worried if it had less bolts. Or you mean the convertor is held to the flexplate by 6 bolts? Wouldn't be surpised at all, hell even 302 (Ford's) converters get 4 bolts and honesly I was a little surprised to find only 3 holding my TH350 converter...

trans is out of the truck now, going to orielly's now. Seal is good, BUT IT'S THE WRONG SEAL!!!!

thing fits looser than a goose on the convertor tube.

Re: This is going to be fun.

well, trans is out and back in. Replaced the seal and the many bolts on the pump were L-O-O-S-E (like handtight loose) so we tightened them down. After hassling the cooler lines and wiring, all thats left now is weld the exhaust crossover back on, driveshaft, trans filter and fluid.
