I have come across a Borg Warner T5 5 speed transmission. How well would one of these hold up to a 250 L6 or small V8? Would it be big enough? I'm not planning on racing or having a high performance truck. Mine will be just for cruising around and the occasional show.

How big of a motor could I put behind it? I just want to know more out of curiosity. I like my 6 cylinder but just in case I want to do a V8, how much will the T-5's handle?

what is the tranny out of? There are about eleventy billion versions of the T-5

Boardmember gr8scott has had a T-5 behind his V8 for years. He has a 350, but he doesn't romp on it and it's held up just fine. It all depends on how you drive.

Says the tranny is out of a 1989 S-10. My plans don't involve driving hard or fast. but i don't want it to give out under normal conditions

Just make sure it's not out of a 2.8L V6, I don't think that the bolt pattern on the bellhousings are the same. If its out of a 4.3L V6 truck I think you're set. I'm not positive, so somebody please back me up or tell me i'm wrong. Justin

you are right on that.
I *THINK* there may be spline issues if it is out of a 2.5 truck, but it'll still bolt up.
Hope for a 4.3, I would run that on an inline, or anything 307 and smaller.

T-5's were also used on v-8 cameros and rustangs. Decent trans, only problems I have ever run into is the shifters tend to break off if your hammering down alot lol

they explode internally if you drive them like that. The strongest one was only rated at 305 ft pounds of torque.
The camaro ones place the shifter too far back, and are mounted at a 13 degree angle on the crossmember.
