Talking the 36 grit bed (PICS) PAINT !

here is the bed I started on a couple week's ago and that some freaked out on me cause I sanded it with 36 grit snading disc (WHICH IS NORMAL TO ME)
and for the record you CAN fix the aftermarket taligate to look good and align perfectly ! it just takes some kicking and screaming cursing but it can be done !!

sanding old paint off with 80 grit is like taking a knife to a gun fight !

Re: the 36 grit bed (PICS) PAINT !

What was your progression of sandpaper? 36 grit - 80 - 220 - 320? I take it lots of priming and blocking maybe? Some paints are harder than others to remove. I'll usually try some paint stripper first before going down to 36 grit. I'm just always scared I'll end up with lots of little sand scratches once the paint really cures good. Your's looks real nice, can't wait to see it assembled........................Bamm!

I was just referring to that if you started with a smoother base you will have a better end result. Less work in the process as well trying to fill 36 grit sand scratches. What do you finish your body filler in?

I can't wait to see this truck finished. (although probably not as anxious as 19673ontree)! I love the contrast between the black paint, and the white trim. It's going to be one sweet looking truck!!

think of it like this
you are going to block your primer ANYWAY to obtain a straight body , so in doing that you will take care of any scratch's without even trying ,
even new panel's such as door fender's hood's or whatever need to be primed and blocked ,
I start with 36 on a 6'' disc with a drill cut it all down get rid of ALL old paint surface rust and such , then I use the bondo to take care of dent wave's or whatever you need , then sand the bondo with 36 grit on an straight line air sander , prime it then sand with 180 prime it again go up to 220 till you get it pretty straight then prime it again and finish with 320 , paint it !
and even with all that on a color like black you can still see little wave's and such if you look at it down the side on the right angle , that dosen't bother me because you can go look at a new truck and do the same thing ,

Re: the 36 grit bed (PICS) PAINT !

One thing I have learned is that there are always a dozen ways to do something right. We pick up work habits through trial and error that work for 'US' the best.
Early on in my knifemaking I had several other makers tell me to start with 36 grit belts. Ruined the first four knives, haven't put a 36 grit on any of my grinders since then. Everyone has things that they do a certain way that works for them.
Your finished paint is much nearer perfect than I could do with 5 years of block sanding.
Love the truck, love the paint, love the fact that you have found a method that works for you so well.
Please do post more pics as you get it finished up- I love the 'Tuxedo' black paint with only enough white/chrome to make the black even blacker.
Just a gorgeous truck, you should be proud of your work. Thanks for posting the pics!

Re: the 36 grit bed (PICS) PAINT !

that is deffinitly one of if not my all time favorite truck on here, i just love how sweet and simple it looks but yet so badass at the same time, the simple trucks are my favorite ones and your truck just defines that, cant wait to see the rest of it together, what are you doing with the interior and engine bay?
