My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
I don't understand how some people stay in business. This past Monday afternoon I got a commitment from my local exhaust shop to install my exhaust system this Friday morning. Thursday I stripped the old exhaust system off and installed my ram horn manifolds and got everything ready to take the truck in to the shop at 8:00 am this morning. I thought I'd call the guy and just confirm the plan was still on and he was expecting me. He tells me the deal is off because his exhaust man is taking the day off for a long holiday, try it again tuesday! He leaves me sitting here with my daily driver with nothing on the exhaust system but open exhaust manifolds. I called another guy and His price is around $400 or whatever it turns out to be. I guess customer service is not a business practice at muffler shops around here. On the bright side, can you imagine what will be going on in the heads of my fellow commuters when I pull up to them at the light this morning with an open exhaust system?

Running open headers is fun!
I like the exhaust setups that have the valve or flange setup just past the headers .... that way when you want to piss off the neighbors you can. Good luck with your exhaust man.

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
What kind of exhaust system are you going with? I supplied my own mufflers I got cheap at a yard, and my local shop installed a dual system w/ H-pipe for $150.

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
Are you running the ram horns only? This is not bad for the valves?

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
They used to say open exhaust would warp valves on a Ford flathead...I don't know of anyone really damaging anything on chevy v8. I have run a lot of racecars with open headers and never hurt a thing.

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
I'm putting Flowmaster 40's on my pickup tomorrow -a longbed - with an H-pipe, and 2.5 inch diameter pipe - all together it's gonna be $450.00.

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
The Flowmaster 40's on my truck installed was exactly $450.00 as well. Same exact specs as above 2.5" H-Pipe, and chrome tips.

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
Well I finally got the exhaust on. I found another shop and they took 6 1/2 hours to do it today. The used aluminiumized 2 1/2 inch pipe and put an H pipe on it. I supplied the super 40's and they did everything else for $438. My truck is a 4x4 and they had to work to get it in the right places with the vette manifolds. I also had them put 3 inch by 24 inch stainless extensions on it. I have to say the work looks very nice. I'm gonna crawl under it in the morning and really check it out up front. Evidently it didn't hurt it to drive it with the open manifolds. The 40's are loud and the H pipe makes it HOWL!! I love it!

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
Glad you got it all taken care of. I also had mine done this morning/afternoon. I set it up wensday and he was right on time. I used A1A Performance Mufflers in Santa Rosa Ca. I also had the rams horn center dumps and that added alot of time over the rear dump truck manifolds. He did a 2.5" out of the manifolds and into a Flowmaster "Y" pipe then into a single 3" flowmaster (40 I think) and out the back. I went with a single due to not much room and I wanted extra torque for towing. It soulds sweet and when I just pulled in the wife wents nutz over the sound Oh and it was $300

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
Kevin, I like it, I got SS Magnaflows on mine, it was $500 with Aluminized
2.5" pipes all the way around, dumps in front of the tires. I'm wondering about that $1200 system myself, hell the cat back set-up is under $700 and it is all mandrel bent pipe. Anywhoha here is one of my pic's on "GQ" *Because of the style headers I used no H pipe was doable, and sorry if the pic looks crappy, she was a lil dusty that day and before I cleaned it. These pipes are as high as the frame rails, that's up there for a 4wd I also have about 30+ pic's in my "Merlot" siggy link, just choose "GQ" pg 13?

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
pipe shop prices really depend on your location. I had 2 down pipes installed... .alluminized 2 1/4 inch pipe, from the manifolds to the preexisting system.... cost just over 100 bones... and that was after shopping around.

Re: Burned Valves.....
Only hurts if its really cold outside!! Or no manifolds at all!!! Its the rapid change in temp that hurts you. Like putting your frozen hands from a snowball fight under hot water......OUCH!!!!!

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
The thing with the valves is having a short exhaust manifold wil suck the cold air back into the cylinder past the exhaust valves and "CAN" cause them to warp.
-Lance BTW: NICE EXHAUST SYSTEM!!!

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
I had duals put on two trucks this past month. Flowmasters all the way straight out the back bumper on my L/B. Turbos out in front of the rear tire on the Step. Last summer I had one shop do the L/B they done a bum job & I wasn't happy they leaked at the donuts and didn't fit or look right at all. It took him 4 hrs and I wasn't happy. I think this last shop done real good & was worth the extra money. Yeah & about 4.5 bills this time. 3.5 bills last summer.

Re: My $260 exhaust system is cancelled
i forgot to coment on the valve comments...
While it isn't a small block; I drove an 81 citation in high school (stop laughing) This POS had the pontiac 2.5 iron duke 151 inline 4. For an exhaust system, I had a manifold. That's it. I never had any problems with valves getting burned/damageed/swallowed... nothing. Drove it in the summer, winter, in the snow, rain... you name it. Down to 20 BELOW 0 degrees. (U.S. degrees... not canadian degrees) I ragged this car HARD. red line at every stop light and I'd pop the clutch. Yeah, THAT'S how hard I drove it. I ended up literally breakin that crap box in 1/2 on the rail road tracks. Don't worry about your valves. They'll be fine. |
