dropping the rear end idea...
I want to know what you all think of my new stupid idea:
Im soon to drop my truck (needs it badly ) and I was thinking, since in the rear, the plates are welded on the axle. couldnt I just flip the axle over 180 degrees and have them on the bottom? what do you all think that would do? good? bad? I need some insight before I act like a jack azz thanks in advance all! Cruor

If I understand correctly what your asking ie flip the diff so the left hand side wheel is now the right hand side and vise vera to have the pad located above the spring without altering the mounting points in any way shape or form, the ring and pinion in the diff will be rotating backwards meaning the reverse in the tranny becomes the forward gear and reverse has 3 speeds. i think, i'm not sure.
However if you mean relocating the diff in the same plane as it is in now to above the springs and fabricating new spring pads on what is currently the bottom of the diff that would work fine, its what i intend on doing soon to, just need to get the pinion angle correct in relation the the tranny so you won't flog out the u joints |

wouldent that be a sight to see, 1-speed forward, 3-speed reverse. lol, put it in first and take off backwards!!! that would be a good way to build a dune buggy with the engine in the rear.

Should have said don't quote me on that above I think thats how it would work tho. I mean if it was as simple as flipping the diff nobody would buy aftermarket flip kits would they??

You can't flip it.....the pinion is mounted offset towards the bottom...flip it and the driveline gets closer to the bed.
Also, you'd have to pull the carrier and flip it.....but I don't think it'll go back in flipped, due to the offset pinion..... Then you have the vent you'd have to plug and relocate......

While any thing is possible, that won't work for the many reasons mentioned above and probably a couple more.
Flip kits are dirt cheap. Why not just do it right and focus your attention to other important things.

Haha, flip the axle and move the engine to the rear, now that'd be unique as hell

IF you flip it, the gearing is now siting above the oil level, not to mention the fill hole will be in the wrong place for the proper level in the housing. If this is what you trully want to do, just purchase a flip kit and do it without the pain of a lot of welding.
