Wiper motor dies in traffic....
I was driving in the rain the other day and my wipers "overheated". It stoped raining for a few seconds, and they were on at the time, and they just died in the middle of my windshield. They work OK (besides they are slow as hell) when it is raining pretty steady, but the second the windshield gets half dry they die and won't work for a few minutes. I checked on a new motor at the parts store, and it is $49 for a "3-prong" and $56 for a "4-prong". The truck is a '72 Chevy C10. How do i get to the motor to see how many prongs it has, and how big of a pain is it gonna be to switch them out? Is there anything else besides the motor that could cause this?

Rebuilt 350, roughly 300 HP thanks to a mild cam, Edelbrock intake and carb, headers, and 40 seires Flowmaster mufflers. Ochre with a white top. Plans as of now include a bigger cam, lower gears, and lots of body work.

The only thing I can tell you is to plan on spending a whole day doing this. I've never done it but I do know that it is a royal pain in the arse to get at and remove! Oh and I would buy THE best one you can get because I don't think your going to want to do this more then once!

ahve to remove outside cowl vent panel under windshield and get uunder dash and rmeove sem stuff form dash to get to the motor to unplug it and remove the three bolts that hold it to the firewall, under the cowl panel you need ot remove the nut on the end of the motor shaft and pry off the wiper arms levers bracket deal, might as well remove instr panel or glovebox liner to get room to remove the motor, if it overheated, then its probably needing rebuilt, could have it rebuilt at local electric motor shop for less than new one, maybe,

Before doing all that, i think I would confirm it is the motor, and not the electronics. Most likely it is, but you'll be REAL P!SSED if you do all that and it still acts up.

never know, could be switch, maybe, but if it overheated then well.... you at least have a lot of reistance going on somewhere, keep in mind that hot feed to motor from fuse panel is always hot and that the speeds are contrlled by variable ground

I dont know if it overheated or what, but it wont move the wipers unless the windshield is wet, giving it some lubrication. It is really gutless and slow as hell. Well, i guess i know what i will be spending one of my weekends on .

For years mine worked OK, but was very slow, especially on cold mornings. I was always looking for binding linkage, poor electical connections, etc. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new motor, which resolved my problem. As I recall, it was maybe a 2-3 hour job. I'd by a real GM motor if possible, although mine is from Golden State and still works fine after 4 years.

I just replaced mine today and it was no big deal (non-a/c truck). I got a used one from CPNE, and it worked like a champ. I was really nervous about getting a bad used motor and having to swap it again, so I was very happy when the wipers went so fast. Cost me $10 and took a little over an hour.
Make sure the new motor comes with a new seal. It's kind of messy to try to use the old one ------------------ 71 SWB Stepside Houston, TX
