Paint Job Prices

I am thinking of getting my '69 C10 painted. Never had one done before, and it looks more work intensive with the interior and all needing painted than a normal vehicle. What type of cost am I looking at?

Anywhere from $3,000.00 to a blank check. It all depends on what you want..show quality or driver. I always would like to see other customers cars before they touch mine.

Also depends on how much work you do. If you take everything apart and prep everything, you can have it shot for around $800 + paint.

I have seen people spend $5k and not be happy because they skimped on the prep then over paid for the paint.

Mine was $5,500 There's a board member on here with a gorgous black truck that cost $19,500 to paint, I agree, you need to see the work they are putting out before you leave your vehicle with them, I've seen too many friends go witht the cheapest place & it sits there for months & when he finally hounds them enough to get on it, they whip it out in no time & it looks like crap.

i have a dream of pulling it all apart and doing it all myself someday... might be even closer to reality if its going to 5 grand to paint it again! of course, the opportune time would be at the point of the full-frame-off when its time to start putting it all together.

I had my truck painted in 1994 for $3000 plus materials. Total for the job was about $4500 (Red paint is expensive!). At the time the painter was doing jobs on the side. He showed me pictures of other cars, and trucks he had painted. He also took me to go look at a truck he had recently finished.

He's now painting full time, and the same job would probably cost me about $7-8K. Although I think now I would do the majority of the disassembly/prep work, and mainly leave him with only minor prep work and spray...

I'll probably be doing just that within the next year or so. It's been about 13 years since he painted my truck, and there are some areas where the clear coat is lifting. I also need to replace rocker panels.....

I just painted my truck and it took almost $1000 buck's in material alone , I used all my own tool's (SAD AS THEY ARE) and did all of it myself , I have no idea what you would have to pay for good quality work ,
I wish I had somewhere to spray the paint without all the bug's and dust all over the place ,
have you thought about just painting it yourself ?

I spent right at 10K on my 4x4 right at 9 1/2 years ago. That does include a large amount of rust repair as well. A painter that I have been using recently quoted me 7-8K to do my C10.

I just got mine back and it cost me about $4,000. But that was bringing the truck completely disassembled and sandblasted and given back to me disassembled! I priced having it done with bringing him the complete truck and he doing the sanding and disassembling and it was in the $9000 range. Just depends on how much elbow grease you apply..

I was quoted $4500 for my 71 GMC. Truck is fairly straight to start with, has a couple small dings that need a little body work. I have yet to get it done though....still debating if I want to tackle this project or not.

Good set of rims w/ a nice stance, these trucks will look good! Even with spots of primer, and mixed panels!
I say don’t rush it…save up until you can get exactly what you want.

In so-cal your looking at $3-4,000 for body work and paint! That's a driver quality paint job inside & out! I will repaint my 71 GMC in the next year or two!

i say just take your time and paint it yourself, its not hard, all you need is some tarps and a canopy

I have done everything on my resto project myself, working on build primer and blocking now. If I go back 2 1/2 years and just add up the materials, tools, primer and paint products I would say I am at about $2,500 or so. When I am done I will have painted every surface of the truck. Fixing just the exterior and not taking it down to the frame would be cheaper obviously. I bought a little pressurized sandblaster, several cheap then one pro paint gun, gallons and gallons of primer, paint, and chemicals, sanders, many sanding blocks, etc. I have probably spent $300 just on sand paper. I can't go to the auto body store without dropping two bills its seems like...

I started knowing next to nothing about auto body and paint at the beginning, but my skills are improving. Its a real fun learning process. It helps a bunch that my wife is ok with living at a body shop [the mess, the fumes] and parking her car outside in the snow, so I feel lucky about that. The best part is yet to come though when I roll the truck out of the garage done, all my friends that think I was nuts to take apart a functioning truck will be so surprised . Just be sure to not embark on a project of that magnitude though without being honest about the time factor. I work on my truck nearly every day for several hours [8pm to 2am mostly] and I am hoping to drive it before it gets cold here again in September.

Some of these guys make it sound easy. It's not. Spraying is easy. Getting the body work done and straight is the hard part. If you have never done it you will have a lot of learning to do. There are tools and supplies you will need and knowing what works with what. I'm just gonna let Calvin take care of my baby. Guys like Calvin are very hard to find!!!!!!!

A buddy of mine paid $1,000.00 per gallon for his PAINT! I could never see doing so unless it was a super rare car. As said before, in my past experience I say getting it ready to paint is the worst part, a few good air tools and you can tear the truck down in no time. Remove the glass, rubber etc. You will be much happier in the end.

Mine was $7,000 about 8 years ago.
Minor body work. Rust in the floor, and had a new bed plate welded in. Did have a few mods done to it. The prep work was extensive though, and it was taken apart and put back together. It's painted inside and out.

What the old saying? If you have to ask, you can not afford it. I had my motor out and parts lined up for the painter. I knew him when he first started painting. He had painted several of my friends cars 68, 69 camaros, and novas. He does excellent work.

Something told me to talk to him before he started. I am glad I did, because he could not give me a price. He told me it could be from $3500 to $8500 for the paint and body work. If he would have told me $4000.00, I would have my truck in the shop now. That price range scared me off. But from what I have been told, he has started to scare a lot of people off.

Here are some details on my paint.

Filler: 3 gallons of Lightweight filler, 2 gallons are probably sitting in my shopvac (I suck at Bondo) ($18/gal)

Primer: ¾ gallon of Epoxy primer/sealer ($75)

2 gallons of high-build polyester surfacer (should have used other 2) ($120)

Spot etching primer on all my sand-throughs

Sealer ¾ gallon Standox sealer ($100)

Color: Light Quasar Blue (’93-’95 GMC)

Standox Base – He mixed 1 gallon, sprayed over 3 quarts of it ($320) (enough left over to do the bed)

Standox Clear – about 3 quarts, 3 coats on the hood and roof, 2 coats on sides ($300)

I did all the surface prep and taping. My buddy’s neighbor, Dan, sprayed the primer and surfacer, and I took it home and spent a week blocking it. Then I brought it back to Dan’s shop, re-prepped and re-taped everything and he shot base/clear on the insides of the doors and jams that evening. The next day he sealed the outside and sprayed it with base/clear. My buddy wanted some painting experience (he’s working on a ’65 Mustang Fastback) so he stayed in the booth the whole time and shot the basecoat on one side of the bed. Dan also gave me a lesson on Bondo and a dolly/slaphammer when he started repairs on one side of the bed for me. He also pulled a dent on the door (no Bondo needed after he finished that spot.) He charged me $450 for his spray hours in the booth. So the paint job cost more than what I budgeted and far better from the paint job I had originally anticipated!
