1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
I know this may be a simple question but it's been boggling my mind. I have a 72 LWB C-10 or C-20 4x4 not sure which. A friend was trying to tell me it was heavy duty 1/2 ton running gear but it's an 8 lugger...kind of confused..

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
could be a halfton with 3/4 ton running gear, but being an 8 lugger its a 3/4 or higher. I have a heavy half, and its a five lugger (2wd) and two heavy duty blazes (75+86)and they are six luggers. Dont know about 72s, but im pretty sure its a 3/4. Lose your fenders? thats how you usually tlel what it orignally was.

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
If its a 8 lug front and rear,it's a 3/4 ton.Really though the only difference between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton is the rear axle. The front only has different hubs to match the bolt pattern of the rear.Look at the VIN and post it,then we can tell you.

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
the fenders should have C/10, or C/20 badges... but the badges coulda been removed, fenders swapped... what ever.
Post the first 4 digits of your vin, we'll tell you what the TRUCK was originally, and then we'll know if it's been modified or not. |

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
Well the Cheyenne 10 badge would mean its a 1/2 ton, and the 4th digit of your vin "1" also means its a 1/2 ton. It would be a 2 if it was a 3/4 ton. So I guess at some point someone swaped axles.

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
ok that makes sense...i think that's why i was so confused...didn't consider the axle swap...now i'm wondering about the brakes...where could I get a drum brake kit and in what price range?

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
Currently it has drum brakes on the rear and disks up front...however they don't work worth a damn...I'm going to try re bleeding them and then go through the steps that I got in another thread...if that doesn't work i'll let you all know

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
if youve got to get new brake parts just call it a 72 3/4 and see if they fit

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
LOL
I wanted to ask that when the comment HD 1/2 ton came up. All 4X4 trucks had 6 lug wheels. At least you know what to ask for on your brake parts now. |

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
Don't feel like a dunce, it's almost a common question.
You'll be amazed at how many ppl see 6 lugs and call it a heavy half. Considering heavy halfs had 5 lugs, and weren't even created till the mid 70's... it'll kinda surprise you haw many ppl call them that. you'd have been a dunce if you never asked. |

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
All 1/2 ton 4wds had 6 lugs. They had Dana 44 front axles and 12 bolt rears stock. The 3/4 tons had 8 lug with Eaton rear on Chevy and Dana 60 on GMC.Still had the dana 44 front but with 8 lug hubs/brakes..There was no stock 1 ton 4wds in the 67-72 era but the 73+ era with the 1 ton 4wd drivetrain had 8 lugs too

Re: 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
DOH!
Good catch... and you are 100% right on the one ton info, and the lug count on the K/10 and K/20. I'll have to take your word on the eaton/chevy and dana/GMC info... same with the front end stuff. I never paid much attention to the 4X4 stuff. |

Got the brakes and tranny fixed haha...dug the inch and a half of muck out of the master cylinder...bled all the nastiness out...refilled her with brake fluid and tada she stops haha...weird how that works huh? haha and the tranny was a simple vacuum line that was non existent...now I gotta start looking into lifts
