gas tank location ?

I'll admit I'm a 67-72 new bee however I can't help but wonder if we could
mount a tank on the side of the frame as opposed to behind the rear end ?
did'nt the later truck's do this ? and was that the dangerous ones ?
I am thinking the rear mounted ones make most sence but I want to do
some bed mods that make that idea difficult and I'd like more cab room
but only if it makes sence

Re: gas tank location ?

if you search the board youll find alot of guys that have taken the tank out and put one under the bed with many different filler options

Re: gas tank location ?

yeah the my sister's insurance company hada fit about her 76 longbox 2wd, it has dual tanks outside the frame rail, i dont believe they would work because the later cabs were designed over the tank and the floor of the cab had a step up under the seat our truck floors are for the most part flat

Re: gas tank location ?

My 69 4wd had a tank mounted on the side of the frame and it was wedged in between the frame and bed side.It had the filler neck go up into the wheel well.
Of course it wasnt a factory deal but some crazy person that owned it before me wanting another tank on it.The tank is gone now.I had it off within owning it a week

Re: gas tank location ?

I have a welded in Hitch/Receiver setup, so no place to put a tank under the rear of the truck, so they had to put a stainless fuel cell in the front of the bed of the truck.

If you go with ECE's hidden hitch than a tank will fit just fine!

Re: gas tank location ?

The hidden hitch would be nice but here in IL we've got this crazy law that states that the plate has to be visible at all times. Even when a trailer is behind it. If Washington is like that then that would not work for him.

Re: gas tank location ?

Mine's all welded into the frame, so no tank back under there for me, I believe Washington has the same law, but this is my third lowered truck with a hidden hitch & have towed my boat & trailers for years, & never got noticed by any officers.
