i need to remove the ignition from the ignition switch housing.
this is a new setup not on the truck yet .
i tried using the key and thought all i had to do is insert a paper clip .
didnt work

I have only been successful in the last two (2) of about 20 tries. Lots of WD40, very stiff wire (the best is the return spring on the turn signals) and LOTS of jiggling. It would have been nice if the key would stay in the ignition once it is turned to the ACC postion ('68 and newer)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to make sure the ignition switch cylinder is turned counter clockwise as far as it will go before you insert the wire (I use a large paperclip). When you insert the wire you should be able to feel the spring loaded pin push down. Once the pin is pushed down turn the cylinder counter clockwise a little more and remove the wire, otherwise it will bind in the hole. You should then be able to turn the cylinder the rest of the way and pull it out. On some switches it can be turned too far, so wiggle the key back and forth a little.

also try to "feel" and "see(imagine)" where the little detent pin is, mine wasn't quite to the "turned all the way" point - after it was apart, I saw why it was so frustrating... it doesn't take a gorilla grip or a chisel, just a little finess to get the pin to push back. If you have another in the truck already, try it on that one so you don't scratch up your new one trying to figure it out...

i got a question, what if you dont have a key to the truck,are you just s.o.l.?
i bought 2 trucks from the same guy.and only got one key outta four...and yes i got titles so there not hot.

no key, you can use a slide hammer to snach out the old lock and replace with a new one or if your pick skills are ok you can pick it to acc and then use the gem clip as above. this is a fairly easy lock to pick

Unfortunately you can't pick GM sidebar locks and they have been using them since 1935.... All you have to do is pull out the passengers side door lock. There should be a code number stamped on it (see pic) and a key can be cut by a locksmith from this number that should fit the ignition. Hardware stores and Wally World can't do it you have to go to a regular locksmith shop.
