'68 c10 may not pan out.

I recently posted about a '68 C10 that I was getting. Well I called DMV and there is $600 in past due registration owed on it. So I might be passing on the deal. I would rather give someone a grand for something registered than to give california any more money. So I may be on the hunt for some thing else. Man this sucks!

How does that work? If your vehicle isn't registered for a certain amount of time, do you have to pay for the back registration? In Oregon we don't have that. My truck wasn't registered for 3 years, and all I had to pay was the normal two year registration.

Same in WA...no penalty for not registering. Sell out of state and then buy it back after re-registering.

Not in Cali! You are charged for past due registration plus penalties plus interest. This state blows when it comes to stuff like that. When you buy a vehicle here and the registration is out dated, the buyer becomes responsible for it! WTF is with that!?!? It's a money thing here.

Re: '68 c10 may not pan out.

In california the truck has to be out of reg for 7 years for it to drop out of the computer. Other wise your paying all the fee's that have been tacked onto it.

How good of a deal is the truck? I may still be worth the extra cash. See if they will go halfs with the reg. Just knock it off the price of the truck.

Re: '68 c10 may not pan out.

So I'm gonna be up against this soon......My truck hasn't been registered siince 96!..and I didn't pay for the yearly non-op......just seems stupid to me to pay $10 a year for the privilege of not driving my truck on the street!....I know...I'm a tight@ss!

So when I go register this thing what will be the process? Since it has been more then 7 years, do they have any record of it whatsoever?

If it is out more than 7 years then they have no record of it. You only pay $10 at the time of non-op. You don't pay it every year. Atleast I never had to. I think you may have to get a brake and light inspection. Not sure.

That is completely rediculous. If you don't drive it, then you shouldn't have to pay for the roads/bridges or whatever the hell else it is they do with that money. Jeez.....

It doesn't work like that in Texas. If you bring in and old registration for a vehicle that has been expired for however long, they just ask you if you've driven it at all since it's expired. And of course the answer is "no". Pay the normal yearly fee and you're off.

Re: '68 c10 may not pan out.

Here in OK you had to pay a max of 2years. You used to be able to show proof of non use like engine blown or trans something that kept it off the road but you had to show receipts.

Re: '68 c10 may not pan out.

YES.....just got off the phone with DMV....they have no record of my truck. I got lucky cuz the lady said that she's seen vehicles stay in the system for over 10 years, but she thought they fell out after the 10 year mark.

And you guys are right....one time non op fee ($15 now).

AND YES.....this state sucks SO bad when it comes to all the BS fees!!!!!! Why the hell should reg fees be based on the value of the vehicle???

Scenario...

Guy sitting at a stoplight in his $220k lamborghini that maybe weighs 3500 lbs and probably had to pay +$20K for his registration.
Another guys pulls up in his 71 caddy 4 door that probably tips the scales at 3tons and he pays $40 a year for his registration!

Aren't reg fees typically used for roads?......which car above causes the most wear and tear?.....the guy in the Lambo drives with a light foot!

It is JACKED UP beyond repair and we are ALL along for the ride.

Re: '68 c10 may not pan out.

This is terrible. The gov't lives by the premise that our money is essentially their money, which is evident by all the taxes and fees assessed to everything we do. I'm surprised they haven't figured a way to tax the oxygen we breathe....sorry, rant is over.

Re: '68 c10 may not pan out.

Some states, Cali included, has turned the registration fee from a user fee, (road repair fund) to a property tax. It is stupid IMO, and criminal, however, its all about the mighty dollar, and Cali will squeeze every penny they can out of you.
