Rockwell Help
Hey
I have a 1969 Chevy 4x4 with a SM-465 and a Rockwell T-221 I just need some info and some diagrams Its my first truck and Im only 15 and i need a little help Any help would be greatly appretiated |

My 68 has the same set up. 465 & t-221. I got a lot of good info on this set up from the guys on the site. I think the 205 is a stronger t-case and parts for the 221 ane hard to find. After talking to some of the guys on the site I set up a spare 205 with the right tranny adapter with new seals and coupler. I was going to do the swap but decited to wait till the 221 craps out, if it doe's. One good thing about the 221 is that the rear output is about 5" lower than the 205. That is a plus for a short wheel base. I'm also told that the 221 has poor lubrication on one of the large bearings, so watch the gear oil level and keep it full.
Border Parts in Spring Valley (San Diego area) california carries parts for the 221 if needed.

Running the same set-up on my truck. Although parts for the T-221 are not real common, I was able to find everything I needed to rebuild mine a couple years ago. It WILL leak, so keep an eye on the level of fluid in it.
Mine was an absolute PITA to shift until I rebuilt it. It has worked very smooth ever since. (Helped having all the shifter bolts tight)

I printed out an exploded view diagram but forget where I got it. Luckily I still have them and will post them here. You may have to enlarge them but they're readable. My 221 is stuck in 4-high but I have another T-case somewhere... might try to rebuild this iron beast though.

well for a while I was running my 67 K10 as a daily driver and didn't have any problems with it. Usual deal leaks but that was an easy fix. When I say I have a Rockwell T-case people usually cringe but I think it's fine for non-trail rigs, which is what my truck is. It's going to be too nice to take off-roading, that's why God made ols Toyota trucks-for beating to death! It's fun!

Mine was all of the above after it went poof. It's also a good time to check the splined drive collar between the output of the tranny and the input of the transfer case now...if it's about to let go (splines worn off) you'll need to find a new one, and they are a little bit different than the 205 piece, but you could probably use one. Oh, and if you go to take it off and it's giving you problems...there is a "hidden" bolt holding the adapter to the transfer case itself. You have to remove the little side cover to get to it. This bugged the crap out of me when I tore mine apart.

Yeah, it'll do a fine job for this, provided it is in decent shape. That's what mine gets used for. She's my DD and weekend warrior. No hard-core wheeling, just out having fun. Been thru things I've seen jeeps get stuck on/in. Got me thru a snow drift this winter that I had no business trying to go thru - Woo hoo that was fun!

I was gonna run my spare Rockwell 221 and SM465 4spd in my 71 shortbed 4wd but decided I didn't want to put the granny 1st gear 4spd in with that motor I had for it so I went with a turbo 350 and NP 205.My 69 4wd has a Rockwell,it has had past leaks but there is never any oil or anything on the floor underneath the truck.My spare t-case/4spd doesnt leak any fluids either.
My rockwell and 465 (AKA-Big chunk of metal!) before being pressure washed,and the second is after the spare 465/221 were cleaned...Never had any problems with the rockwell.In the first pic you can sorta see the old mud grip tires and the old closed knuckle drum brake DANA 44...
