Gotta get some traction!

Okay, so I have plenty of power, I just can't get it to the ground. I've had enough of spinning my right wheel off, while the left wheel sits idle.

This may finally convince me to go 5 lug when I put discs up front ('70 C-10), if I can find a decent posi rear end. I'd really like to stick w/ 6 lugs though.

What is a decent posi unit for my factory 12 bolt that won't kill my bank roll? I have a few friends telling me to go with "Lincoln Lockers" (welding my open to where its a full time locker). Something tells me that would make it less than driver friendly. Any experience with this?

I spend most of my time pulling my 3,000 lb boat. I often spin tires going up nice concrete boat launches. The natural rock bed boat launch 4 doors down is unfortunately off limits until I get a better solution.

Re: Gotta get some traction!

you can forget about pullin a trailer with welded spider gears and trying to park or makin smooth turns or driving on wet roads its a poor dangerous choice
the best bet for cheap is a used rear that you can get some use out of but like everything a 30-40 year old part usually has a limited lifespan due to 30-40years of abuse

Re: Gotta get some traction!

I'm going to be in the same situation with traction. I thinking on trying one of those Powertrax lockers in mine. They are going for around $400.00 and are suppose to be an easy install.......

Re: Gotta get some traction!

don't do it, my friend had a 85 c10 (468bb) with the rear welded, making left and right turns were terrible if you gave it any gas, too much gas and you would continue to go straight

Re: Gotta get some traction!

I've been doing lots of research on this subject because my Bad Boy Hot Rod truck that has lots of power & lots of money thrown into it, also only spins the right rear, in my opinion the best/most economical posi (Limited Slip) is the Eaton Limited slip unit that they have been installing in GM 12 bolt rearends sine the mid 60's, you can buy a brand new one, usually around $360-$400, or you can buy a used one for $250-$100 depending on condition/mileage ect. If you buy one that's pretty well worn, you can buy a new re-build kit for around $120 (4 springs & the clutch/disks) installing this unit in a non posi bolt rearend is something I would leave to an expert/experienced person (there's several critical tolerances, backlash adjustmetn ect.) here's what they look like, & beware of sellers telling you they have one that fits 12 bolt trucks, & chevelles too, their are not cross compatible, only 12 bolt truck eatons work in 12 bolt truck rear ends. & the same with car rearends. There is better/beefier units, but they are in the $550-$600 range & that's just the pumkin (Auburn gear). Here's a picture of the Eaton that I'm talking about

Re: Gotta get some traction!

I also wanted to add that there is a series 3 eaton that goes from 3.07 to 3.73 gears (Ring & Pinion) & a series 4 goes from 3.73 up.

Eaton's the ticket, went that route myself, whole thing ran me bout 1250 with new posi, gears, axles, bearings, labor..etc. Well worth it for me!

Re: Gotta get some traction!

I got a question about this. How would you identify if a vehicle at the junkyard has a posi, other than taking the cover off the axle, I probly would anyways to see the condition of the rear end, but just so I dont have to pull every cover off to check if there is a posi in there. Would there be numbers on the axle that would tell? what about in glove box? Jack rear up and spin tires?

Re: Gotta get some traction!

Sure, if you have deep pockets, but I think "graywolf" said something that won't kill his bankroll......That's why I mentioned Powertrax. Maybe not as strong as the beefed up Eaton's. But it's something you can do yourself....

Re: Gotta get some traction!

While were taking Posi. I have a F@rd 9in in my truck. Any body up on what F@rd has for posi's. I supposedly have limited slip but with the 454 it only spins the right rear most of the time. From a dead start sometimes it spins both ??????????????????

Re: Gotta get some traction!

Does anyone have experience w/ the PowerTrax? I'm concerned about how streetable they are.

The nice thing about the PowerTrax is that you don't have mess w/ the ring & pinion, just the spider gears. They make it sound as if its a simple matter of wrenching & no precise adjustments to be made. I'm leaning towards 70GMCer's way of thinking.

Re: Gotta get some traction!

They are good and should hold up to the abuse (they are waranteed if they don't) and you are correct, just pull the spiders and slide the power trax in and done!

I love the PowerTrax unit in my truck. It was a great upgrade for the money. It's just a little loud at times (when turning).

Re: Gotta get some traction!

I was also about to jump on the power trx, (it's a little cheaper too) but I didn't want to hear the clicking noise when turning, in a 4X4 I wouldn't care but for a lowered street truck I wanted a quiet option for posi, Yes, you can jack up the rear end & maybe have someone turn the right rear tire & I would go over & hold the left/put some resistance on it, cause sometime even an ope diff will turn that left tire if it's in the air & no resistance on it. The glovebox may say posi, but you never know what's been done/pulled & replace on a truck that's 35+ years old.

Re: Gotta get some traction!

Hey? Did you see this? Might be cheaper & definetly an easier install, not sure how far it might be from you though.

Re: Gotta get some traction!

The guy that set the 9" up in my 68 Camaro said the power trax were junk and he had a box of them he had pulled out. I guess they can't handle the big power and they are clicky like a locker. I think a guy needs to spend $450 and get an Eaton. I stole off of Cr@%&'s list and love it. It has the new carbon fiber clutch pack and I paid a whopping $125.00 for it. The guy didn't know what he had....but I did. Guess that makes yet another club:

Thanks for that part at 10% of it's true value club

Re: Gotta get some traction!

It's the Powertrax No-Slip Traction System, Summit # PWT-92-0788-3005. I'm running the GM Performance ZZ383 with 150 shot of nitrous. 3.73 gears with a 700R4. Runs great, but like I said I get some noise ( clicking ) at times. Royal Purple gear oil made it much better.

The best part is it goes in without having to pull the third member out. Takes about an hour and it will light both tires.

I didn't see the parts as "junk", it's been holding up well.

And this was only one man's opinion I listed. It's just like the Holley Demon link where guys were saying what they liked best. Horsepower TV put one in a Chevelle and they said it worked great.
