Re: gear shift indicator light ???????

Is it a tilt?

Non tilt - had a fiber optic cable that mounts to the rear of the gauge cluster. They tend to break.

Tilt - has a lightbulb under the indicator plate.

Probally be a 94 bulb and a rubber boot that turns into the back of the indicator. Not too sure though I have a 80 Camaro column

Plugs in to one of the dash lights. There should be a bulb holder on the end of the fiber optic cable.

Re: gear shift indicator light ???????

- it should be a funky white connector on one of the 4 dash lights that stay on all the time with the lights.

Those would be the 4 that go across the back of the cluster - in the middle...

if this isn't clear - I can get/find a pic

Re: gear shift indicator light ???????

2 screws to take off the indicator housing. You will see a light bulb in there with a green filter on top of it. Remove it carefully and replace with a new bulb. IIRC it is an 1187, or something like that. It will be stamped on the bulb. Be very careful not to break the shift pointer when removing the housing.

I was answering the question that the original poster asked. Now I see that was 2 years ago

You can just post a question yourself, no need to ask in an old thread.

That's a good idea, but when you can't find the answer in an old thread, just post your question. It saves confusion. Glad to hear it works now!

Re: gear shift indicator light ???????

Reviving an old thread to ask: how the heck do you route this wire from the shift indicator housing down the column and up to the cluster?

There’s a small conduit for the blinker wires at the bottom of the column but I have now idea how to get the wire down and into there without taking apart the whole column. Any help is much appreciated!

Re: gear shift indicator light ???????

The fiber optic line routes through that conduit along with the turn signal switch wires. You should be able to snake the fiber optic line down through the shift indicator pointer hole and have it pop out down below where the conduit is located. You will have to slide the conduit down toward the dash first.

Thank You!! I got this done last night -- it was not straightforward for my little brain!

For anyone reading this in the future, it's actually pretty easy. The key to a) remove the two covers below the steering column in front of the parking brake b) remove or slide the conduit cover, which is held in place by two bendy prong thingys and in my case some tape (original?). Gently bend back the bendy prong thingys and slide the cover out of the way and then route the wire down through the opening then grab it at the bottom and have it follow the blinker wires down and up to the back of the gauge cluster where it clicks into the light for the speedometer.

Then do some stretches because working under the dash probably made your back hurt...
