Cool ashtray question

ok, the other day, i went to longview to a relitives house, and there was a beat up old gmc 4x4 truck there that hadnt been ran for...god only knows , and anyway, it had a few interior parts that i needed for my 67 chevy. like stock rear view mirror, visors and ashtray, well with a lil minor work, i got all the parts to go onto my truck except for the ashtray . are they different from the gmc's to the chevy's? the ashtray will go in there with a lot of pushing and when u try to open it, the whole thing comes out. i dont understand how to make it go in there right. can somebody help me out? thanks.

Re: ashtray question

There are two types of ash trays, one with metal slides and one with plastic slides. They are not interchangable. Since yours is a 67 I bet the original ash tray and bracket had metal slides and the ash tray you got out of the other one is a plastic slide. Go back and get the mounting bracket with the plastic slides if you want to use the new one. Hope this helps.

Re: ashtray question

All gmc had 4 headlights. If it has no marker lights then it is a 67.

Re: ashtray question

that pic shows the marker lights and 67 chevy and gmc trucks didnt have them, so if your truck is a 67 then it shouldnt have them if its got original body panels and if the truck you pulled everything from doesnt have them then its a 67 to but if it does have them then thats why the ashtray wont fit

and nobodies laughing, everybody was new at one point or another

Re: ashtray question

did it say GMC on the hood, or in the grill? The latter makes it a 67

Re: ashtray question

Chevy/GMC,same year for year except obvious GMC characteristics.A`67 dash is different from all others. The ignition switch sits more flush than the others. The rearview mirror arm is a long narrow cast piece,no plastic cover. The wing vents look different. The heater controls will have a painted black background instead of verticle ribbed aluminum. The arm rests are thinner and grab through like a handle. The ashtray will just have a metal slide,no nylon and no ball bearings. The slide is straight. If it has a glovebox door option sheet it will say Panoramic back glass if it has the larger back window.

Re: ashtray question

Are you sure you're putting the ashtray in correctly? I had to take mine out awhile ago to do some dash work and it took me a couple of tries to get it in there so it doesn't fall out. If I recall correctly, it doesn't fit in the manner logic would dictate.

I'd try jacking with it a little more to see if it slips in.

Re: ashtray question

The tab in the center of the ashtray has to be pushed down far enough to let the rails on the side of the tray to align with the slots in holder before it will stay in. I had to push to tab on mine all the way to the bottom of the tray before it would line up right.

Re: ashtray question

ok, it did have side markers, i think it said gmc on the hood, the rear view mirror was a long narrow cast peice with no plastic cover, heater vents were gone, not sure about the armrests the ashtray was all metal, no nilon, and did run on ball berings. had no option sheet. this truck had been screwed up.
