New Clutch accompanied by the worst sound ever! Help!

Recently my father and I just replaced the clutch in my 69 C/10 LWB. It has a 3speed manual trans. We got a Dynapak clutch kit which included a new clutch disc, pressure plate & throwout bearing. We just finished putting it in today and hooking everything up and getting everything adjusted. We followed our Chassis service manual carefully. We also changed the engine oil & transmission fluid. Everything was properly lubed before going back in. However, when we start it up it makes the most terrible sound ever. It's a squeaking, griding, clicking, whisking noise. However it goes into gear fine and the clutch essentially still works great. Everything feels like it's in fine working order, but it doesn't sound like it. We're wondering what the hell could be making this noise? The noise is consistent with the engine RPMS - by this I mean, the noise is louder and faster if the engine is revving higher. We know it's coming from the tranny and not the engine, because the sound is coming from right under the cab.

Can anybody tell us what might be wrong?

Could the dust shields located in lower front of flwheel area be bent or out of place and rubbing on the flywheel?

WHAT GORDO SAYS IS ABOUT RIGHT. BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU DIDN'T REPLACE THE PILOT BUSHING IN THE CRANKSHAFT. I WOULD ALSO LOOK INTO THIS. IF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE IT, USE A PILOT BEARING FOR THE DIESEL ENGINE.THIS IS A DIRECT REAPLACEMENT PART, AND WILL CUT DOWN ON THE HEAT , AND WEAR OF YOUR INPUT SHAFT. HOPE THIS ADDITIONAL INFO HELPS. GOOD LUCK

Also, if the clutch disc itself was put in backwards it will make a terrible noise. usually there is a sticker on the disc hub that lets you know which side to face out, if the disc hub was put in facing the crank there will not be sufficent room for the disc to clear the flywheel bolts.

it will also do that if its not lined up on the flywheel right, the guide thing that holds it in place while you bolt on the pressure plate fell out while i was bolting mine up, and it wouldnt let the pilot shaft line up right, and it made that noise.. did it come with the clutch alignment tool? if not then your clutch probably isnt aligned and thats why it wont work right.... i had a brand new pilot shaft bearing so i knew it wasnt that on mine

Let's start at the beginning---did you replace the pilot bearing that mounts inside the engine crank---it's a bronze thing? Did it fall out? If you replaced it, it should be a snug fit into the crank and over the front shaft of the transmission.
Next---did you tighten the bolts that attach the flywheel to the crank? Did you have the flywheel resurfaced? If those bolts are loose, could give you all kinds of noise.
Next---the clutch has a front and back---did you install it with the coiled springs pertruding into the pressure plate or backwards?
Next---did you bolt up the pressure plate to the flywheel evenly so it sits nice and flat?
Next---did you install the throwout bearing correctly---sliped onto the clutch fork with the proper greese in the right place?
Next---remove the bottom clutch cover as Gordo suggested to eliminate that as a possible noise maker. Then with a flashlight, look for scrape marks on bolts, bellhousing, etc. I would not run the truck untill I found out what is making that noise.
Fortunately a 3 speed is not a monster (like the4 speed) to pull back and check out. More then likely you have something in wrong and a quick carefull inspection will find it. Good luck and let us know what you find---if all else fails, try a local board member who might be able to come over and bail you out!! Huck

Just a thought: I too had strange noises after I replaced my clutch.

I fired up the truck while it was still on the ramps and this unholy sound was coming from somewhere. I thought it was the clutch I had just installed. Turns out that it was the angle the truck was sitting at, and the low level of oil in the pan was causing the noise. DOH!
