Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

My ignition keys don't work on door locks. Did they have a round key for doors 1n '71? Can anybody make one based on VIN or do you have to remove or replace lock? Thanks in advance.

They are separate keys for the ignition and doors, that is if they are still stock.

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

Yes, the square key will go in the lock all the way, but it won't turn the lock. I thought maybe the lock was just froze, but you are probably right that it was a separate key. Do you recommend taking out the lock and having a locksmith make a key OR replace the cartridge OR what. Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

Has anyone made one key to work everything? I was thinking of doing that down the road. Is it better to keep separate keys?
I think you need to pull the code from the passenger side lock cylinder to have new key made.

Probablly cheaper in the long run just to replace the lock cylinders. I don't think they're more than 30 bucks. Just my $.02

Yep, a pair of cylinders are cheap at $15. Can you get to them by just taking of the inside panels?

Not sure what to expect on the other side of the door panel, IE window regulator and such, but shouldn’t be that hard.
Where did you find the lock cylinders?

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

Hmmmm? Come to think of it, my 1967 that I had way back in 1976 only had one key that did everything and I'm certain it was stock. Maybe a bit of "finesse" is in order to get it to turn.

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

Best bet is to replace the door locks. It's simple, remove the door panel, disconect the lock rod, remove clip, and pull the cylinder out of the door. perform steps in reverse for reinstallation...

if you are gonna replace the locks, you may as well spring the extra 10-15 bucks and get a complete kit. this will give you ignition, door, and glove box, all keyed the same.

I think i paid $35 for my complete set

One key should run doors and ignition, if not, something has been changed.

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

Seems like it should only be one key. Mine has two though. I should try the PS door with the ignition key, but it’s really worn and don’t think it will work even if it is correct.
Something could have been changed on mine somewhere down the line too. It’s definitely a PITA.

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

maybe i'm thinking about cars, but I remember 2 keys, one square, one oval.

Only truck I had that used the same key was the one i bought ignition and door locks keyed the same. I also have a Freightliner lock and key for the glovebox. (ya never know what is interchangable).

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

I got replacement locks keyed for just one key to replace mine. Maybe there was a switch on them as my 70 has the two separate ones and they are the originals, I guess I thought they were all that way cause all my GM cars had the separate door/ignition setup until my 92.

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

My truck uses just one key for both. What bugs me is that you can't lock the doors from the inside before you shut the door, because they unlock when you shut the door. My truck has only been on the road for a week so I'm still getting used to those little details.

My '72 has one square key that opens the doors, ignition and rear hatch. It is stock.

Re: Do our trucks use door key ... or same as ignition?

If you look in the owner's manual(if you have one) at the beginning it states that when the truck was purchased the dealer gives you two keys with the removed "knockouts" and each key works both the doors/ignition. My truck had two keys, door and ignition as the ignition was changed but the Suburban still had it's original locks and one key worked the ignition, front doors, and rear tailgate. In 1973 GM switched to separate keys with the oval key for the doors and the square key for the ignition.
