68 2500 4x4 GMC Burb

I got my D60 unloaded off the truck and thought I would share a few pics. It’s a DWR so I will need to run spacers on the rear axle or find a set of SRW hubs for it. I may go to the spacers and hummer wheels. I will be cleaning this up this week you can see from the pics it needs work. I have a set of king pins left over from my blazer project that never got used so they will be going in this one. Ill take a lot of pics for you guys so it can be turned in to a tech write up for the board.

Re: 68 2500 4x4 GMC Burb

What do you think not bad I sold my d60 35spline hubs stub shafts and hydro steering from the blazer I sold to get this with the money. I ended up only adding $30 out of pocket for it by the time it got here.

Re: 68 2500 4x4 GMC Burb

I kinda traded my blazer tub for this I found it on a ports board for sale and Ricks trucks bought it for me and delivered it in exchange for my blazer tub thanks Rick. It’s a NV4500 out of a 96 2wd chevy dullie. check out the emergency brake on the tail shaft now no need for expensive Cadillac calipers for my rear disk swap now. And for every one that hasnt seen the burb it was the March 2006 truck of the month Winner - The Beast
it was owned by Superron21 at the time I think he stoped coming around after I bought it but I hope to see him here again some day.

No offense, but how did this beast win a truck of the month? Looks more like it drove over a truck of the month to crush it and spit it out the other side. This should be interesting though, I look forward to it.

Here's the link... It was themed TOTM "The Beasts!" check out the rear hook!

To be an eligible BEAST

• Open to all trucks, burbs, Blazers, Jimmys, and whatever other names the SUVs use. The years can be 19-whatever to 20-whatever.

• It must be road worthy and currently legal (or close to it) to be on the road.
• It must have at least three imperfections. This includes things like different color paints (or lack of paint), dents, holes (large and small) or whatever might make someone afraid to go near it for fear of catching some sort of disease .
• We won’t call them ugly, because we know it is just our baby’s character.

I think that they should have added that it gets less than 5mpg too!

Re: 68 2500 4x4 GMC Burb

Yap it didn’t win for its good looks it was for its lack of. That is if you don’t think it looks good I kind of like it. I don’t care for the leaves painted on it but I do like the flat green. My wife wants it painted bright blue and I want to paint it olive drab. I may have to do a poll and see what every one thinks. I’m hoping Kurt can help it out in the looks department I just have to convince the wife to let me spend the cash I’m running out of things to sell and trade off. It needs a new barn door now my wife took the driver side one out dented it up some and broke the window out of it I’m still not sure what she did I was at work when it happened. I guess I’m going to have to start selling plasma so I can get some things done to it.

I have a few more pics of my parts stock pile I need to post up for you guys. I have 2 boats I have to get finished this week so I can work on my own toys a few days.

This is a heavy axle I can pic the d44 up and move it a round when needed but this one is a little more then I can handle It will be going on the dolly Tuesday when I start tarring it down. This is a wide axle its 10in wider then the SRW I was thinking a bought using spacers on the rear axle but I have only seen 3in spacers they wont be enough to make up the 5in difference. Does any one know if TonyP is still around he designed a set of spacers for just for this? By the time I do all of that it may be cheaper to just get SRW hubs for the 60.

I’ve never had a truck with a hydro clutch is it worth putting one in or do you guys think I should get the advanced adaptors bell housing that lets me keep the stock manual clutch set up?

I’m using a divorced 205 and will be making a cable shifter using B&M cables to do it with. The divorced 205s mount from the top so I have to make a cross member for it the original doge one will not work very well.

Its going to be a 6.2 deisel when done so no headers. Here is a pic of the engine waiting on me to get it out and rebuilt. I also have an Aux battery box for it. Check my electric fans out there vintage air had them for my 72 blazer and never used them so now in the burb they will go.

Do you remember were you got the half rebuild kit?

I've been trying to find one but my parts stores are saying "dealer only" item now.

Had to shim mine last time just so I could drive the POS on the pavement.

Haven't seen Tonyp on this board for probably 1 1/2 years at this point.

I dig that Burb - a true beast for sure. I will enjoy your write up as I have a D60 that will be going into my 69 K20 at some point.

I have a hydroclutch in my 69 K20 that I got from a donor 89 1 ton. I sure like it but it was a pain to bleed!

Ill look when I get back home most places buy them seprit and make the kits. Ive had these for years there left overs from other projects. Ive worked on a few d60 strange thing is Ive never had to regear one until now. this has 4:10 I need 4:56s so Im trying to deside if I want to pay some one to do it or do it my self. I also need to make up my mind on locker or spool. to many choices.

Re: 68 2500 4x4 GMC Burb

Its been a long day I worked on boats all morning and this afternoon started tarring in to the 60. I cleaned it all up before taking her a part. I started on the driver side and found that its been apart be fore and who ever did it did not know how to work on a d60 first the locking hub was missing 3 screws. Then I get it open and one of the three guide tabs was broken off. I then seen why who ever opened it up last time did not know to remove the big snap ring on the outer hub and they took a chisel or screw driver to it to try and get it out it was beat up bad so im sure that why the guide tabs were broken. I hope when I do the other side tomorrow they had learned there lesson and didn’t mangle it up.
Than I ran it to some trouble and a 18mm socket had to give its life for the cause it will be missed but not forgotten one of the steering arm bolt was almost rounded and it just so happened an 18 mm fit it with a little persuasion.
The worst part of the day is the lower king pin cap that rides in the baring will not come off I tried every thing it wont come off so I quit for the night to regroup. The lower bearings are shot so bad I can tell with out getting the cap off.
So far it looks like from the knuckles out will need to be all new . Maybe Ill get lucky and it will have 4;56 gears in it and I wont have to regear and be able to use that cash for the other stuff I now need.
I did e-mail Parts Mike yesterday on getting king pins by them selves he said no problem he is going to sell me just the lower king pin bearings and seals for both sides for $28 I don’t think ill be able to get a better deal. He also sells a high steer arm hit that does away with the king pin springs its not self adjusting like the springs but with some time and a little tweaking by by death wobble. I haven’t made up my mind on those arms or the yet a little pricy but way cool here is the info on them incase you guys want to check them out. http://www.partsmike.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4115

Well I have got to go Ill hopefully have pics up tomorrow of the work.

It left the out C in bad shape blad this is not a constent rotating part. the king pins were not to bad but the bushings were wore out. I took some pic of them you can see how they had groves wore in them and and how the side with the bad baring wore the expantion space out.

Looks like you've got many hours of good 'ol manual labor ahead of ya. Have you done the diesel swap before? I almost did on a Blazer once. You can't move the engine very far forward- I don't think that would be too easy to do as the water pump will end up into the radiator. I remember that to put the rear of the engine in the stock location, you would have to do something like this:

Re: 68 2500 4x4 GMC Burb

This will be my first deisel convertion I started on on my blazer but then sold it before it was finnished. I have seen pics of on 72 with a 6.2 in it and it didnt look like he had any clearenc issues with any thin but the heater core. Im going to use electric fans so that will give me some room and I think I have to have a body lift to clear the trans. As soon as I can get the axle under the truck Im going to get it off the blocks its on know and in to the garage to start figuring out ware the engine is going to sit. then the body is coming off so I can paint the frame and it will be easier to get the new drive line figured out. got some more pics for you guys. looks like they had taken the passenger side apart to fix a bad wheel baring to bad they didnt know what they were doing and destroid the locking hub. Check out the scaring on the spindal.

Tomarrow if I get a chance Ill post pics of the tools I used to get this thing apart. A few years ago I bought a spindal puller if you guys are going to take a d60 apart you need to get one it will save you a ton of time.
