BB 402 questions

I have a 402 out of a '72 3/4 ton Cheyenne. I ran the #'s on the front of the block in the "Chevy red book" (TKX) and it checked out. I have the motor on an engine stand and noticed "pass. high per." on the back of the block. Also, "pass." is stamped on the top side of each head. Were there any differences in intake manifolds? When I bought the truck, the motor had a '69 Chevelle 396/350 factory high rise manifold on it. The guy I bought it from threw in a '71 BB intake manifold. I put the '71 manifold on and it did not cover up the water ports in the middle of the heads but all the bolt holes line up. Last, what is the best way to get old crusty auto paint off a motor while leaving it assembled? Thanks for any help.

To take off old crusty paint, I used an aircraft spray on paint stripper. Spray it on let sit then wire brush it with gloves on it is like an acid. Then hose well with warm water and a varsol sprayer. then blow dry. prime it and then paint it. thats what I did to my 350

Don't worry about those "water ports" in the center because they are not water ports. What you see exposed there is correct.

Pass hi perf on the back of th block is normal to see. I belive that all BB blocks say this on the back (correct me if I'm wrong). Pass on the heads just me that there just stock truck (penut port) BB heads. Which means there nothing special now if the heads said pass hi perf on them then that would mean that you had a set of High proformace heads whice would not have come stock on any of the BB's put in are trucks (to my knowledge). 68 BURB 50TH LOOKALIKE work in progress, soon to have 250-I6 with a 3-speed on the tree 4.11's and posi ( currently sitting in back yard tarped awaiting time, $$$, and lots of love!)

67 1 TON- work truck 396 sm 420 4-speed, flat bed 4.57 gears "big red" (my first landscape truck, very rusty and crusty! but still gets the job done when needed!)

"Pass" on the heads indicates oval port heads. They are not necessarily peanut port however.

You have regular oval port heads not small oval or beanut heads because they didnt make small oval heads till 1975. Hope that helps. I have a BB from the same truck and year and mine hast the same thing cast on block and head. Good luck.
