Toys make work go better!

I have bad luck when it come to home repairs. The ones that are suposed to go real easy always turn into major overhauls. But on the bright side is I had to clear out the wood shop end of my fab shop so that means all the toys get pushed out side. Here is were the good part comes, as I am working in the wood shop and back and forth in to the house I get to look at them all day long

So here is my bad luck, as most of you know my wife is having our first son (Taylor Andrew) anytime now. But because it has been so hot in Winters (I know go figure) and we do not have A/C yet so she had to go stay with her parents until it cools off. We don't have AC yet because I am having problems getting my new 400amp Meter panel installed and hooked up so right now my 60amp service will just not cut it for A/C.

So while I was waiting for the electrical guy to show up I thought I would be a nice guy and install the new kitchen sink that my wife ordered (extra deep single basin) for washing Taylor. While doing that I found drywrott in the counter so off it came. Then I watched as the lower cabnets (1911) fell apart. So off to Lowes I went to see what had to be done to replace those lowers. Then I thought it would look bad if I left the upper and so on and so forth and now I am in a full blown kitchen remodel. I want to get it done before she come home and I have not told her about it yet
I think I will have a very busy weekend. To top it all off sparky never showed

Here are a few pics for the Home repair guys out their. The house was built pre 1911 and is a craftsman style bungalow. The interior walls are all 1" thick redwood planks that originaly had cheese cloth and paper for a finish. Today I re-plumbed the entire kitchen (old galvinized pipe), re-wire 1/3 of it, insulated the exterior sink wall and rocked. Then tonight I demo'd the other side of the kitchen and bought all the new cabnets for that side. Hope to be taping in a day or so.

it all starts out innocent enough ( a simple sink swap). this is why I am VERY hesitant to do anything with the kitchen in my 1916 Sears. the west half used to be the back porch. the floor work would be way to interesting.

kevin, i know where you are coming from i have a 57 chevy 2 door post ,87 1500 2wd ,87 f350 (tow vehicle) and hopefully a 69 panel all next major resto's plus i've been working on huge house projects. i thought my moto "if i dont finish one project i cant start another " would work but that went out the window ten years ago.

Cool pic's, are you going to distress or antique the cabinets to keep with
the craftsman theme? or are you gonna give the kitchen the modern day
look? I luv that old stove, you can tell it's a older home cause of the size
of the kitchen, most people back then didn't make them rooms very big.

We are luck are we not. When we spill a drink you just open the back door and out it flows! Mine is 3 3/6" of an inch in the 14'6" lenght of the kitchen!

Yes all new appliances including one of them dishwashers thingys.

Very nice! I also live in a 1947 home and absolutely loved it when I took out a wall to put three bifold doors (for a Laundry room) and discovered the whole back room use to be a porch and was sloped. Made for an interesting time.
On a side note those planks of wood might make a great wood floor for the truck! HMMM!!!

As always I'm sure it will turn out great. I did the same thine once.My wife was gone for the day & I thought "hey, I think I'll paint the bathroom." It had ugly dark paneling.Well I started to pull the paneling off & it was going good untill I got to the sink vanity,I had to pull it away from the wall to get at the paneling.Well that vanity really was a peice of crap anyway so I took a sledge hammer & removed it To make a long story short when my wife came home the toilet was in the garage & the bathroom was in the back of my pickup. Time for a crapper off resto I told her.

Well I spent Saturday night and most of today with my wife and her folks so work was a bit slow in the kitchen. Saturday we did get the demo finished, new wiring done and shear 3/4" shear ply glued and screwed. Then tonight when I got home at 8pm I sheetrocked the rest of the kitchen that we are doing now. I will put on a cote of mun about 5am, run to LOWES and be home by 8am when my Dad gets here. He is going to give me a hand leveling out the rest of the cabnet base's, install the cabnets and make the counter top suport for tile or granite. That should be a good day of work. Then Tuesday I hope to finish the taping and start finishing the cabnets. Wish me luck because I think my wife will be home by Thursday and she still has no clue about the work going on

why the plywood on the wall? is that to help match the thickness of the lath and plaster?

how do you like running screws into the ancient studs? my Snap-On cordless 1/2" has troubles.

on the good side my 9 year old son likes to help with the demo work. I just put him in the room with some tools and close the door. "have at 'er Son"

The ply wood is for shear value. If you look at the framming pic you will see their are very few studs in the walls that are full length. I did not have lath and plaster but instead I have 1" thick red wood planks that hold it all together then they used cheese cloth and paper for a finish over that. So the ply is just a much better system of the same with sheet rock over it all. Plus it adds alot of sound deadening to the house as well. My studs are also redwood so screws are no problem. I also used subfloor adheasive on the stud to ply conection.

It's a shame I don't live in Cal. I would hook you up with that 400a service. That would be a gravy job! Big numbers scare alot of people off. Are you using twin 200a panels or a single 400? I bet your running lots of new circuits for all those new appliances. Good luck, looks great!

The hard part is just finding the right panel. I am running two 200A main panels, one for the shop and one for the house and both are in the buildings so Yolo co. requires that the meter panel has a one flip kill all power for the fire dept. Yes I have added ton's of circuits. Two per room ( one for out lets and one for lights/fans) and dedicated circuits for computers, fire smoke alarms and misc.

You could try a 400a fire switch into a trough and then split it in the trough, then run to each panel, which would give you the 400a main but then having 2- 200a sub-panels. The only difference is now you would need to run 4 conductor wire to each 200a panel instead of the 3 conductor.

the kitchen looks great, but its the home owners law of + or - 10%. that 50 dollar sink cost you a 5000. kitchen remodel. the other day the girlfriend thought it would be a good idea to put up a 20. dollar bug zapper so the bugs don't eat the dog alive, 200. dollars in materials later, the bug zapper is up and the dog is afraid to go outside when it is on. go figure... anyway the kitchen looks great i hope the wife likes it, good luck
