Tire size what do you think is to big.

I’m trying to decide on tire size. I have 36 12.50 on my burb now but think I need to go bigger. I will be driving the burb around 60 miles a week when back on road so I want it to be some what streetable. So what do you guys think is to big what size tire is an over kill for a some what daily driver. 38, 44, 46 or go for the big 49? What do you guys think? Im building the burb to be a mall crawler for the week and then a toy on the weekend Im even thinking 2 set of tires one for work and one for play.

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

I'd go no bigger than 38"s. 44 or 46" tires are awfully heavy and you should do some brake upgrades for something with that mass. Plus, what mods are you willing to do to fit a 44" tire? That takes alot of lift or hacking. Your mileage has to already be low but 44"s are going to really eat up gas too. Lots to consider when you decide to step up to tires that large.

I agree, 38s seem to be the limit IMO for something you plan to drive often. Anything over 11" or so tread width makes it a pain on rutted roads- even slightly rutted asphalt. Death wobble can be impossible to eliminate on the bigger sizes also.

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

I was thinking some were around 40. MT has a 40x 13.50 all terain tire out and I thought it would be a good street tire for when Im not on the trial but Im just wondering if once you get that big if there is no hope for any kind of good handaling and long tire life on the street.

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

I daily drove a bronco with 39's for 2 years with no problems. I did try 44's on it and they were too much. So I'd say 38's-40's max...

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

The largest tire I had was a 38. on my blazer I was happy with them even wwent down to a 36 14.5 but the burb has 36s 12.5 on her now and they look to small.

Climbing up into it gets old for a DD. I ran 40" Regul Trailblazers on a '74 C/20 with a 454 and 4 speed for several years. Jumping in and out becomes a chore.

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

I'd be more concerned with 'type' of tire than just size.

For a DD you'd be alot happier with a radial tire IMO.

They make nice ones up into the 40" size which to me is enough for a DD truck.

Two sets for different application's makes perfect sense but in reality you might get tired of changing them every Friday/Sunday.

40's would fit the bill nicely without having to do any further mods with the axles set up your running.
44's and larger will mandate stronger parts. (shafts, u-joints...etc.)

How about drive lines?
What are you running for those?

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

I need all new drive lines made for it so Ill probly just go a head and get a good set made from High angle drive line. I was thinking abought the MT atz 40in alterain tires or the 38 in MTZ but I wasnt sure if they would be agressive enough to use on trailes too. I hope to get a set of tires that will last 30k.

Are you running stock axles? If so, you may want to upgrade to stronger axle shafts and ujoint along with the d-shafts.

I have 37's on my Jimmy an wouldn't hesitate driving it daily (I have two trucks so it doesn't get driven everyday). I would look at the 40"mtr's, they are a quality tire that you will get decent mileage out of. SSR's are another higher mileage tire, but there biggest is 38's.

As far as death wobble, if your front end has that much trouble you should fix that before getting some big meats. For balancing do the air soft bb method.

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

My axles are going to be almost stock Im going to use the spicer forged u joints and that abought as much as Ill do to them. I have to buy all new hubs and the lock out hubs so it took some out of the axle budgget that I didnt whant to spend . I guess I need to lern how to change the gears my self that would free up money for stuff in other areas. On my 72 even after I replaced all the king pins and barings with the 38 I still had some woble I ended up putting an extra metal bushing in each side to stop it. Im still thinking about a spring less king pin steering arm set this time but I can convice my sell to spend the cash on them.

Re: Tire size what do you think is to big.

i run 42's bias iroks and 38 radial mtz's.the iroks are ok,but will wear you out with the shaking and flatspotting.the 38mtz's made the truck ride and drive like a new one.all with 513's.i can use overdrive easily with the 38's and have good power,no bogging down or strange transmission shifting.the 42's dont like to see overdrive till about over 70mph,and at that it still doesnt like them.but hey thats just my .02

yeah, climbing in and out does get old sometimes,so does lifting car seats up into the truck. and if i was to do it all over.........id still go bigger
