rapping pipes
how you get your straight six to sound like this i really like the pipe sound it sounds like a loud pitch of a purring sound but i like it does any one know how to get your pipe or pipes to rap on a 230 six.http://chevybombs.net/forum/index.ph...=2726.0Finally got it running

Split exhaust manifold, no mufflers, and skinny pipes. Some people run a glass pack on one pipe and straight-pipe on the other, all depends on the sound you are trying to achieve. My freind has a split manifold on his 235 with 1-3/4" pipe all the way out. It sounds good, but a little to "crackly" when he raps the pipes. I have the same setup, but have 2" pipe halfway back and the reduce to 1-3/4" the rest of the way out. It sounds a little beefier, but you still get the rap.

Anyone have a good pic or description on how to 'split' the stock manifold? Ive heard of people doing it, but never seen it.

Supposedly the cast iron on 230-292 sixes is crap and they don't split real well. Haven't looked in a while but, Langdon's had cast iron headers for these.

Long tube headers are cheaper initially but, won't last near as long. You could just try a 1.5" straight pipe from the manifold out to the back with no muffler and see what you get. Maybe even a 1.25"? Suppose you could Y it to appear as duals (if that's what you want). If your 230 is old and tired, your results may be less than satisfactory even if you had headers.

I'm saying you could try running a 1.5" pipe from your exhaust manifold out to the back bumper and skip any kind of muffler. Try it before forking out the dough for the headers. You could probably do it yourself for not much money. Order the pipe from JC Whitney. You can get assorted elbows and hangers at AutoZone or Kragen.
I've got a 292 with long tube headers and 1.5" dual pipes out to the back. Sounds bad-ass but, the long tubes on a lowered truck really suck. I can't even get in my own driveway 'cause they scrape too bad. Just another good reason to spend a little more and get the cast iron if you absolutely must have headers. Yea, ive got a 230 I think. Casting numbers are gone off the block as it was a reman and that perch is cleaned of numbers.

Yes, a pipe with no muffler from stock exhaust manifold out to the back bumper. A smaller diameter pipe will have more rap to it, I'm just not sure about going smaller on a single setup. Think I'd try the 1.5". If you don't like it and want to install cast iron or long tube headers, you can re-use most, if not all of the pipe.
