New member needs help with front drums
Hi all. I am a newbie.... so bear with
 I just got this '47 Chevy and I can't get the front drums off. Do I need to pull the nut out of the center hub? Or should I be able to tap them with a hammer and they will come free (like the back ones)? Thanks guys. Looks like this forum is filled with LOTS of useful info!!! Pics in a bit Madmaxx |

Welcome and you have to unscrew the nut. Then remove the outer bearing. Remembering the direction it came out in. then try to remove the drum. The hub and drum are riveted together.

 It was worth a try..... Cool. This morning I smashed out what was left of the wood. I might just throw a thick piece of plywood for now. I also pulled out all the headliner. Looks like the mice had fun!!!!  I got the wiring harness today. Gonna lay it out and get an idea of how many friends I need to do it for me  ....THANKS GUYS!! |

Oh! and I called the owner that owned it before the last guy. He was hard of hearing so he handed it to his wife. I told her I was the new owner and had some questions about it.
I asked them what they used to do with it. They were farmers and they used to take it into town and sell pigs and stuff. They were pretty happy it is getting back on the road. |

well it looks like the 2 of use would have lots of fun if we lived close! I have a 49 and i had the same problems with the brakes. The mice also got to my interior. Today I am vacumming all the mice poop out of under the seat. I would say, Take the 3 bowtie looking screws off the top seat and then the botting seat comes right out. See what kind of goodies you find back there. I found a lot of poop, but i found an old jack and other old stuff. BUT BACK TO THE BRAKES. This might be long, but this is how i got mine apart. First, take the 2 regular screws out. If they are tight, give them a love tap with a 1/2 drive exstention or a equivlent punch. Take them off. Next, Use two big flat head screw drivers. One on one side and one on the other. wiggle the drum as far back as you can. Look directly down and see if you can see the wheel cylinder. You have to get a regular/flat head screw driver on the adjusters and back the pads off. You might think im crazy but i had to do this to all 4 drums. They will come off. I would not BEAT them off unless you are changing the drums completely. They are not a easy part to find. Ok back to my truck I go. Im painting the floor under the seat. It smelled like pee and pooh. Yup got 'em off. Now I can't find replacement shoes. I guess there is a local guy that can put new liners on 'em. I will do that.
The wheel cylinders are getting cleaned, the master cylinder is getting honed, the wheels are at the powder coater, the wiring harness is in but not conected.... This baby is about running!!!! |
