Re: 250 or 292 ?

The 250 motor mounts are directly across from each other. The 292 mounts are offset, one farther back than the other. The 250 side lifter covers are about 4" high and the 292 covers are about 6"high. The 250 has a 5 qt. oil pan and the 292 is 6 quarts.

Re: 250 or 292 ?

I would like to add to this thread by hi-jacking it!

Can anyone tell me the internal differences between the 250 and the 292. According to the information I have the bore on all the L6's were 3.875 but the strokes were all different. Are the cranks and cams interchangable between the two sizes? Also are there any differences in the connecting rods?

I've got a 250 that I (stupidly) bought parts for (cam, rings, bearings, .030 pistons) Only to find that my cylinders are crap and so are the journals on my crank. I'm just wondering if I found a 292 if I could use any of these parts.

Thanks in advance.

Shawn

Re: 250 or 292 ?

The con rods are different because the 292 block is 1 1/2" taller than the 250. The cams are different because of the different locations of the distributer and fuel pump. I really don't know about the crank... but the heads, intake, exhaust manifold, ignition, and all sheet metal except the lifter side covers are interchangable.

Well, it depends on what you want to use it for. The 250 will turn higher rpms, but the 292 will pull it straight up a brick wall if you point it at one. I much prefer 292s for use in a TRUCK [as opposed to a roller skate with a bed for kegs]. The 292 is a torque monster. Both are very sturdy L6s.
