Best rubber for 1 ton K5

Really like the 37" crawlers, but want to go bigger! Can't decide with what to go with on the 1 ton setup! Help!

Re: Best rubber for 1 ton K5

Currently a thread going on in the 4x4 section discussing this question.

IMO it all boils down to "hows the truck going to be used" and then decide on how you want it to perform 'best' in what situation.

Lots of compromises when running uber big tires on the street, tough to find a good balance between paved road manners, off-road traction and tread life.

That would be my question:What do you want them to do?Were the Krawlers the best design for your use?1/2t,3/4t,or 1t doesn`t have anything to do with it,unless you`re using it to haul.

JERK!!Nah,just kidding. You`re right that the axles make a difference in tire "size".But,I meant tire "type" or "tread design".It`s all about what you`re a gonna use`m fer.I like Swampers in their various forms for east coast wheelin`.They`ll get you around on rocks, but are great in mud.I think mud performance is the #1 concern for anyone other than the arid areas of the country. If tires will get you through mud, there`s a good chance they`ll get you anywhere.Sand is always the exception.Bald is best there. The sand "is" the traction. It`s ideal,if you`re into serious equipment,to run different sets on different terrains.

VT, Thank's for the tip on the other thread. We have to compromise? Your right! Big tires! Special-k, thank's for the heads-up. It would be ideal to run different sets of rubber. Whoa! there goes the budget! Anybody running 40" or bigger? Any pic's?

Mine are 40's, hence the word of caution.

My TSL's are great off road but I wouldn't want to travel to far with em on surface streets, let alone the whole balancing thing.

Do you intend on going with bead locks?
For any kind of real wheeling you'll want to have something.
Throw them into the mix of street driving and more issues arise.
1) are they legal? (big trucks bring alot of attention from jonny law)
2) the wheel/tire balance game all over again.

You can always get around the beadlock-legality issue with Staun Beadlocks. If I ever went the beadlock route it would be there. http://www.staunproducts.com/

Yup, that's what I'm running but ya still got the balance thang.
Not sure if those a legal either, any idea?

Had a cop ask me once, "what's the extra valve stem for?" and I just replied, "it's a spare". and away I went.

Re: Best rubber for 1 ton K5

Thank's, vt. Starting to look like 40's are about as big as I need to go. I know what you mean about the street manners of TSL's. It's one reason I stopped driving this truck, and put it in storage. And the lift laws, raised a lot of eyebrows around here. I want this rig to be street legal, but it will see very minimal street use. Researching the tire/wheel combo. Yeah, I do want beadlocks, any links to the tire/wheel setups for this kind of app? butzkeg, thank's for the link! Whereabouts in Mi. you from?

Makovai helped me out here. Interco makes radial iroks in these sizes. I'm looking at the 41-14.50.16lt. Only downside is they are pricey, but what else is new? Anybody run these, or have any feedback?
