Should I sell it or Modify it?

I have been looking at modified trucks lately and thinking how much fun I had with the truck I had in Highschool . It was not original at all so I didnt mind playing with it . I had several different engines ,wheels ,tires ,atc. on the truck and I think I had the most fun with the 454 TH400 combo and 3.73's . This tan truck is pretty original and is rust free so I wonder if I should leave it alone , sell it , or just play with this one . If I sold this one I could get another not so nice truck and play with it . I want a big block truck again ! What do you guys think ? Frank

I say play with it, it's not like our trucks are really collector items.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

id have to say, how much do you want and when can i come get her?

That is the nicest not air short wheel base i have ever seen. You even surpassed my former favorite truck, a 1976 swb stepside black w/ red leather interior, all origianl at 56k miles. This truck is geourgous, is it completely bone stock?

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

infact, ive got an 84 c10 short wheel base stepside that needs some body work and a paint job, a motor tranny and driveshaft, i could have it running and driving or leave it as a roller for ya, you could drive up here and we could "trade" so you dont ruin such an angelic truck as this.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

Frank, I think mild mods will not hurt the value. Lets take a look at the 67-72's. We know that they have a strong market right now yet the clean trucks with mild mods are bringing better money than a stone stock truck.

I say mod it....

I say mod it as well... ur truck is so clean, and those are hard to find. I think a mild drop with some 17'' TTII's would look hot... I know where there are some for sale.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

My god that is a nice truck.

I'm modding my 77 GMC. It's a pretty original truck but not quite as clean as yours. All the mods I'm doing are completely reverseable though. Like the stereo system...the dash will not be cut. Any add-on wiring is made to be completely removable and done neatly with split loom so it looks factory. Going to swap engine and transmission as well.

Basically...I say mod it, but make sure the mods are done neatly, tastefully, and mostly reverseable, then you will be looking at increased value. If you don't take the time to do things right you will be lowering the value for sure.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

Holy crap, forgot how clean that thing is!

That said, I'd definitely be making a couple of small changes -- Toss a big block in there, and lower it a bit with some nice chrome wheels! Make the wheels small though, lots of meat is better than rubber bands in my opinion

I agree with this statement totally. This is what I am doing to my 86. I'm not going to do anything to mine that I can't reverse if I want to later on. My neighbor down the street was drooling over my truck when I first brought it home and told me that I should leave it bone stock since it was so original except for the dash being cut for an Alpine CD player that the guy that I bought it from put in .

That lasted about a year before I started changing things. I bought this truck to drive and enjoy while I own it because life is short and you should do what makes you happy. For me, working on these old trucks and changing things makes me happy. ...Joe

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

Just being curious... why do some trucks of that era have chrome trim on the top; but not on the lower? Does the year of truck make the difference or the trim level (BIG10, Cheyenne, etc.) that makes them different?
Thanks,
Anthony

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

Dude,

I def see your delimma. As all have said, that is a beautiful truck ... Agree with simple (reversible) mods. If you are wanting more,, then go for it. However, I personally wouldnt molest that baby too bad. The 77 gmc i just picked up is BONE stock. The guy i bought it from ordered it new in 77 and hasn't changed anything. Not even the old am/fm w/8-track (that doesn't work btw).

I'm probably just going to clean it up as best i can, and tinker with minor things to enhance creature comfort (new radio, etc) and MAYBE rims (as i have a set of 8" s/s craigers in the shop). Keep in mind that mine is Nowhere near as clean as yours, but since its made it this long untouched, i dont think i could bring myself to choppin it up much.

Good Luck in whichever way you decide to go.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

I'd say it's a great starter/project truck for sure.

Having a really solid truck for a project is alot better then a rusted out beater IMO.

Just like our 85 it's solid in all the right spots, but for now it's a daily and work truck and gets decent mileage. I'd hate to cut it up, but I want a project truck to modify the heck out of SOOOO BAD!!!!!!!

I wouldn't sell it to get a project truck, I'd build it.

Just keep the stuff you take off and if you ever want to turn it back you can.

I'd build it, you already own it, you already know what's good, what's bad, solid body, all that. You get another truck you'll find somebody else's messsomewhere more then likely and maybe a rusty one they patched up.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

There are plenty of trucks that you can mod any way that you want. I don't think that I could do that to that truck. Just tooo pretty. It's only original once.

Im with him, but I also am selling my 70 c/10 to buy a fox body lol.

But back on topic, mod it but do it right and do clean work. Its not a big deal to do modifications as long as they are done right.

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

Thanks for the replies everyone . I think I am going to look into maybe a set of wheels/tires first and then maybe lowering it . I do have a couple trucks but one is a 3/4 ton and the other is the one I drive the most . I did think about tinkering with the 77 long bed first . Lower it , 17 in TT2's , exhaust , etc . I really need to get the 77 painted . I think the long bed might look good the way I described it . As far as the 78 goes , I do like the buckskin color since it is different so it might make a neat custom . To answer a question from earlier , I could tinker with the Camaro but I am waiting a couple more years so my boys can be involved in that project . Frank

Re: Should I sell it or Modify it?

I would say go ahead and change some things. If you don't get carried away then it should only enhance I would think.
Mild lowering (2"/4"), dual exhaust with mellow mufflers, install a non-stock radio in a non-stock place so when it is removed no one should ever know.
