How do i spot a 327?

So i called this dude about a motor for $50 bucks, and he said its a small block that he thinks maybe is a old 327. Is there an easy way to tell without looking up the casting numbers. I'm looking for a SB to put in my '70, and i thought a 327 would be cool. I would just go look at it, but its about 30 miles from my house. So if theres an easy way i can ask him over the phone to check something, that would save me from going out there myself. Thanks

Well even the casting Number is not a definate way of telling.

You can have him check for a casting number that will tell you the block ID but that does not mean that the internals have not been changed.

Some of the older 327 have a presed on hamonic balancer (I.E. No center bolt) but, inturn so do older 283's and others

Wish I could help more.

Hope you get lucky though and it does end up being something good for a GR8 price.

You'll be able to check the numbers using this as your guide.

Yep, thats right. No for sure way to tell. 327's atleast some had the camel back heads on them, but of course those heads will bolt on any small block. I always look for the humps on the heads. 302's which are very rare, 327's and the H.O 350's all could have the camel back heads as factory.

The 327's had the oil filler tube, but so did the 307's, IIRC

Re: How do i spot a 327?

Just like Racinjason said, the only way to tell is by the casting number and block ID.
Here are pics of my 327 casting number and block ID. Hope it helps.
If you go by the casting number mine could be one of the following:

3914678....302.....68....2...Z-28 Camaro
3914678....327.....68....2
3914678....350.....68....2

Engine ID (V0318YV) is this:
V= Plant - Flint
03= Month
18= Day
YV= Year-1968 / Type-327 / Transmission-M/t (I have an automatic, there was never a manual in it) / 220 HP / 4bolt / C-10
Got the infos for the id here.
