Dumbest question of all time!

My 78c10 350 runs great but as I was working on lining up my body panels w/my hood off I noticed that the plug wires going to my distributer were a jumbled mess.
I think they may be miss timed (I've seen a small block run on 2 cylinders)
I checked my Chiltons manual for a firing order & concluded that if I don't know which cylinder represents which # a firing order does me no good.
Can somebody just tell me which cylinder is which?
A diagram would be a big help.
Thanks.

Driver side of the block front to back is 1357 and passenger side is 2468.

Re: Dumbest question of all time!

#1 on the cap is the second post clockwise toward the front of the engine from where the wires attach.

Re: Dumbest question of all time!

What did you say...
But seriously, to maybe add stupidity to this thread, does it matter which one you plug the #1 plug wire to as long as they are in the proper firing order?

Re: Dumbest question of all time!

HA HA You quoted me just before I removed that pic........and the only thing it affects is the clearance for the vacuum advance for adjusting the timing...don't want it to hit the firewall or intake.

Re: Dumbest question of all time!

The firing order on the cap can start anywhere. Get #1 on TDC on compression stroke. Pull the distributor cap off and look at where the rotor is pointing. That will show where the firing order will start. It starts clockwise around the distributor cap.

Re: Dumbest question of all time!

On an HEI distributor, #1 is usually pointing around 4 or 5 o'clock, then it goes around clockwise 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
