does cut coils lead to realignment?

little help for the newbie? I'm planning on doing a one coil cut on the front end of my 63 c10. I have Chevelle springs on the rear now, which seems like it gives me about a 3" drop and I think one coil cut from the front will drop it about 2" in the front which will just about level me out. But, does anyone know how far that's gonna throw out caster/camber on the front end? Is it something I can live with, or are my tires gonna be toast in 100 miles? thanks

It won't destroy your tires right away, but you should get an alignment. Any time you raise or lower the suspension, an alignment is going to benefit your tire wear.

you would need an alignment even you took the stock spring out, looked at it funny, and put it back in..... just for the simple fact the you messed with the stuff, will make it out of alignment

Re: does cut coils lead to realignment?

okay, thanks for that. I wasn't sure, I had heard two different opinions.
Just laying under the truck while some fat guy steps on & off the front bumper, it looks like both upper and lower control arms move "in concert" to keep the camber constant. And, I was thinking 'shorter spring....fat guy on bumper' same effect.

In theory, you're right but in reality it's not. Since the upper and lower arms move in different arcs, since they are different lengths and have different upper and lower pivot point, the arms cause the spindle to change camber as they move up and down. At normal ride height, all is well, when you lower the suspension (either with springs or just normal movement, i.e. fat guy) the upper arm moves in a smaller arc and causes the top of the spindle to move inward more then the bottom. This is called negative camber. Different suspesion designs create different camber curves but almost all designs have some amount of camber curves, whether negative (good) or positive (bad). Hope that helps.
