Holley TBI
Went camping this weekend and determined in the hills that I really need to go with a TBI or some sort of EFI because of the hiccups in the elevation. I have an opportunity to pick up a Holley Pro-Jection 2bbl system off of a guy on craigslist for a steal. However, on Holley's website, it specifies that the Pro-Jection kit P/N 502-20S is only good up to 275HP. I'm running a crate motor in the 72 that is the newer style with the center valve cover bolts that is supposed to be putting out 300HP. Realistically, I'm sure that this engine isn't putting out 300, however I'm concerned that it is not enough for my motor. Any of you guys have any experience with this? Should I step up for a larger unit that is rated for higher horses? BTW, here are a couple of pics of our camping trip this weekend, it was perfect weather and great opportunity to get out of the heat for the weekend, enjoy.

Re: Holley TBI
The Holly Pro-Jection units that I know of end up getting taken off. They tend to run lean and have burned up a few engines around here. If you want to put one on, then really consider to bigger unit to help avoid the lean out issue. I know that it might look like a good deal, but it is getting pulled off another reason, and it is not a good deal to have a fried motor. I would look at some of the after market TBI units that use Chevy parts. They are much more reliable and somewhat easier to get parts for if something goes wrong. A few place will even custom build the unit to your application.

Re: Holley TBI
Thanks for the compliments. It was pretty straight to begin with, being an original AZ truck. I'm the third owner, and so far I've stripped it and painted it with absolutely ZERO filler, and I also painted the top with advice from another member. Anway, It's a nice 10 foot paint job (my first attempt at a complete job). I also found a Commander 950 4BBL TBI kit that a guy is getting rid of but that looks like it's quite a bit more intensive to tune and you have to have a laptop to get it all dialed in. Anyone ever had experience with the Howell kits on a SBC?

Re: Holley TBI
VT, what application would you suggest? I know there have been a couple write-ups but the only ones I've seen they pulled the motor as well. Is there a late model application that would bolt on to the motor I've got without having to completely re-wire? BTW, I re-painted mine the medium olive with the white top after seeing the write up of yours.

Re: Holley TBI
Check out the "Fuel Injection Section" over on CK5, tons of great info there.
The last two I got were from truck boards, keep your eyes open and they come up with some regularity and the price is normally pretty good. Get as much as possible: *Computer (very important) *Manifold, injectors and as many sensors as you can. Will need an O2 sensor too. An electric fuel pump will be needed also. You could go either in-line or internal in the tank. (even use the stock tank) http://www.tanksinc.com/cartimages/page_lg_24.jpg Then comes the wiring. I find it easier to buy an after market harness, just saves time and frustration. Cool on the repaint, post a pic. |
