Here's some pics of my frame/tank/exhaust. Hope it helps. I think as long as you tell your exhaust shop that you want the pipes to be bent out to the frame rails right after the axle, I think you'll be fine with installing a blazer tank later.

The pipes are hanging stupid low because I have them mounted to the bed cross members, and well, there's no bed in the pics
Also, I think my pipes run about 3" outside of the frame rails and they're 2 1/4", so 3" pipes wouldn't be much larger.
