Wrong Water Pump??!
I replaced my long style water pump last week and now my alternator bracket doesnt fit. The new water pump is a rebuilt one (traded my old core back in) and there is no clearance for the metal around the bolt hole on the alternator bracket?
I dont know what year my motor is, its a 350, it was in my 71 GMC 1500 when I bought it last year. the water pump I replaced it with was from a 73' 350 (what some board members recommended for a long style water pump) I went back to PartSource where I bought the pump and Checked many other water pumps but I cant find one with the proper clearance for my alternator bracket.... I thought these were bolt on replacements Im not sure what to do??? im almost tempted to take out my angle grinder and try grinding it to fit, but I can see that being a really bad idea... I'll try to post pics later.

pics would certainly help. I am trying to picture where the 'grinding' is necessary

I would just grind to fit, shouldn't hurt anything. (pics would help)

Re: Wrong Water Pump??!
I had the same thing on my last pump. The alt bracket has a spacer about 3/4" that was supplied with the rebuilt pump. The old pump was thicker and did not need the spacer. If you cant find the right pump , they do make chrome aftermarket brackets that will fit that style.
