my dad gave me a sandblaster...

but uh, where do i buy the sand? i ran down to my local homedepot, but the guy there said they dont carry it, only play sand (which he said, is definatly not the same thing). where can i pick up some sandblasting sand?

and this sandblaster is probably about 15-20 years old. its the same one he and i used in about 1987 to sandblast the trailer of our boat for a summer project we were working on. its been packed away in his garage ever since! pretty cool to have it passed down to me after all these years. dads rule

I get mine from a local Ace Hardware. They carry several different grades. I use number 4 for most everything I do.

I get mine from a store called Oschelin(spelling?). It's a farm supply store.

Re: my dad gave me a sandblaster...

I just got a sandblaster today, but I haven't had time to try it because it's pouring outside and that's the only place I have to blast.

I bought my sand at a local industrial equipment supplier. About 30 bucks for 150 pounds.

Re: my dad gave me a sandblaster...

larger building supplys, masonary suppliers, large tool rental company, auto paint supply stores are some of the places i've bought blasting sand// i've found the home depot and lowes play sand collects moisture too easy and is stored outside and chances are good to get moist sand from them

have to be careful with that since the silica is hazardous to breath. Use a good respirator if its not in a cabinet. I used Black beauty coal slag (easy to get in PA) for $10 for 100lbs. Buy the cheap stuff if you are doing large objects (frames, axles etc..) and the better stuff like aluminum oxide, garnet, etc for cabinets. tractor supply sells it and so does harbor freight.

Re: my dad gave me a sandblaster...

I take my comment back, they were 100 pound bags, not 50. So I paid about 30 bucks for 300 pounds of "sugar sand".

Re: my dad gave me a sandblaster...

I agree with msgross. Stay away from the silica sand...it is deadly. Our supplier here in Tidewater VA will not sell silica sand. BUT, whatever you use, wear a good respirator.

There's almost always a local source for blasting media if you look around a bit...

I bought mine from a local building supply store and I used a product called slag, it worked real good and you can reuse it, you just have to use a screen and sift it.

Re: my dad gave me a sandblaster...

Try looking for a place that sells brick/ arcitectural blocks.

There is a place here that sells probably 50+ types of blasting media.

or look for someone who does sand blasting in your area, get it from them or find out where they get it.
