Hey guys, have a couple q's for ya...first off i was just wondering can u get just the factory tach itself and put it in your gauge cluster where the blank is or do you need to get the whole shabang..like tach, speedo, gas, etc...? and also ive never taken a gauge cluster off...what is required? is there a nack to getting the knobs off and stuff? these seem like dumb questions but pls awnser them for me

Nothing much involved really to get the dash cluster out. To remove the light knob, the whole switch has to come out, not just the knob, and this goes for the wiper knob as well. I believe in order to have the factory tach, you have to have all the electrical goodies to go with. In saying that, I mean the circuit board on the back has to be the longer type, to allow for the tach to be installed. The trucks that originally came without, have a shorter circuit board that won't stretch over the tach! lol. I'm sure you don't have to have all the rest of the gauges though, just the tach, and circuit board.

so how do the light and wiper switches get removed? do u have to reach up from underneath?

Yes, reach up behind the cluster. There should be a little button on the switch, push this, and pull the light knob out. Then unscrew the nut on the front, and voila. Of course you have to unplug the electrical parts, but that's a given

Umm not to disagree with joe, but you don't have to remove the whole switch? The knobs themselves can be removed to remove the cluster. The light knob screws off of the switch, and the wiper knob is held on by a set screw.

Oops, actually joe is right about the light switch, but you still should'nt have to remove the whole switch. The wiper knob as I mentioned before is held on by a set screw.

Just an FYI, Pickups Northwest in Snohomish, WA, sells a kit to put a tach into the standard dash. I belive it comes with the tach, wires, new circuit board and plastic lens. I can't remember the price but I think it was around $195.

A kit as bouncy truck mentioned is a good way to go because
you will need other items in addition to the tach. The kits include the tach, wiring harness, printed circuit, new face with the numbers on it for the tach, new housing with the tach mounting hole cut into it, and the inner cover with the hole cut out of it.

$195 for a complete kit is a good price!

This is along the same lines. I have a 8 cly. Tach. Problem is I have a 6cyl. 292 engine. I know they had to make two different tachs. Would anyone trade me a 6cyl one for 8 cyl. one? Thanks

Find the screw on the back of your 292 tach, you can chainge it to V-8.
