what year big block is the best for swap?

just wondering if you guys had any info, or if there was anything to look out for. I am wanting to find a big block for my 72 c10 short bed. Just curious if maybe the older ones, like early 70's are any better than newer ones or something like that.
I ve found a 1986 chevy truck 3100 with a 454 and auto transmission. would that be a good donor you think if i can get it cheep enough and just freshen up with a basic rebuild.?
what kind of hp can i expect .....and yes im like every one else i want 700hp on pump gas for $2500

Mine is supposed to be a '75 but I have never checked it out. All I know is it fits good and runs good. It has the early big block mount towers and these DynoMax full length headers from Summit. WLK-85022 (used with a TH400). I would try to find an equivalent header in a little better quality. I wasn't real thrilled with the quality... I guess they would be OK for a driver if you were putting all new exhaust on.

anything after 73 will be a 215hp 454, stock. may have 049 large port ovals but more than likely be a peanut small port head. especialy a 86.
open chamber heads
2 bolt main

anything before WILL have
large oval port heads
be a minimum of 270hp ,ls3 396/402
open or closed chamber heads[closed chambers are better for power.]
2 or 4 bolt main.

i have a 78 454 with a huge cam and 049 heads and it easily made 300hp
