Re: Cali Smog Test
Yeah it's a bummer living in Cali with all the Smog rules and regs
Was talking with the Smog Tech after the test and asked him if the 30yr rule was still in effect, which would make all vehicles exempt from smog checks after the 30yr mark. The state eliminated the rule so now we are really screwed |

It's still in effect but it's not thirty years, it's just 75 & older.

Re: Cali Smog Test
when they i first started driving my 67 it had to pass smog, it had zero smog equip from a previous engine rebuild and i had it all edelbrock and hei ignition. Well i knew some people who turned a blind eye to that and hooked it up anyway and they actually had to detune the carb and retard the timingfor it to pass, it was running to clean!

Re: Cali Smog Test
how is it possible to run too clean? You should get gratuity for helping the environment, not have to detune your equiptment.

Re: Cali Smog Test
Had to revive this old topic.
I am in the market for a crate motor. I'm really diggin' the 383's right now. Do these have the potential to pass the smog here in CA?

Re: Cali Smog Test
What kinda vehicle are you wanting to put a 383 in? I did one for my '76 K20 4x4 and it passed just fine with a junkyard carb. I had an Edelbrock performer Q-Jet and it ran too rich,so I went to pick a part and snagged one and it passed perfectly. all depends on your combo.

Re: Cali Smog Test
Smog checks go based on the regulations set forth on the year the vehicle was made. It’s kinda like a grandfather clause; it only has to meet the same standards as that year. If you put a bigger engine in you have to register the engine swap and then make sure it meets for that year, engine size, and the weight class (i.e. ½ ton, ¾ ton, 1 ton). Don’t worry too much 1980 was still pretty laxed.

Re: Cali Smog Test
Be careful though... My friend blew his 350 and replaced it with a 454... but it was an 1982 and when he tried to get it smogged, they refused to even hook it up because the 454 wasn't made for his particular truck.
So it's been sitting in his back 40 for the last 11 years. This is why I love having a 1974 - too early for the smog rules! It has some smog crap on it, but I never have to get it tested.

To the CA smog referee, this is classified as an "engine swap". Say the motor came from a 1990 Chevy 454 SS. His '82 would then have to be smogged as a 1990, which means he would need all smog equipment (EGR, smog pump, etc.) that came on that particular truck for him to pass the smog test in CA.

Re: Cali Smog Test
Mine failed the first try. . . visually. It was well within the emission levels but I had a golf tee where a carb actuator should have been. Found the discontinued part in So Cal for about $95, brought it back to the same station and they charged the smog fee again and ran the whole test again. Passed everything of course but it would have been nice if they didn't get me twice for the fee. Fortunately, my county doesn't smog every year--only when the vehicle is sold.

Re: Cali Smog Test
Maybe he didn't put all the emissions equipment on it ? It's possible he didn't take the whole emissions deal seriously. It's a very tedious task during an engine swap. Even worse if you don't have a complete donor vehicle.
