14 bolt disc conversion
I know this topic is widely covered. But I have seen so many different types on ebay for sale ( brackets basically ). I am hung up on the spacer issue. I have seen some with dom tubing spacers, black pipe, small angle pieces welded on bracket, and a really neat set with machinged aluminum spacers. I realilze the brackets are pretty much 3/8's laser cut steel. but whats the opinions on the spacers. Any one have any failure either way. Thanks a bunch for the info.

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
DONT USE SPACERS,
the best brackets to get are from sky manufacturing, they are 3/8" plate steel and are pressed/broke and bent over to the correct distance. they are $90 but they are very nice and will not slop and slide like the flat plate spacered versions. http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/ in the chevy section. |

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
Some of the brackets on egay look scary to me because of the reasons you posted above.
I have DIY4X brackets, they are great never had any problems with them at all. Kert has superb customer service also, which can't be said for all mfrs. Although do use a spacer, per say, it is as beefy as you can get. DIY4X brake page I have used SKY products also, and maybe I caught them at a bad time, but I was lied to for a week about my items. Until I told them I wanted a refund and then the truth came out and my item shipped. May be an isolated incident, but it left a nasty taste in my mouth. Here is the DIY4X brackets

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
Thanks for the information guys. I will definately go with one of the two "bent" bracket approaches. The 2 sets look pretty much the same, and the one is half the price. Kinda puts you in that state of mind where you wonder either one is priced to high, or the cheaper one is cheaply made

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
I used spacers for years on a truck I don't own anymore and never had any problems---although once everything was in place I welded the spacer to the housing on the original flange

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
Ruff stuff sells them as quick as he can get them there has to be a few 100 people on pirate running them so I dont think its cheaply made. he says he makes his proffit off volume not high pricing. the set I have look as stronge as the stock d44 caliper brakets on my front axle.

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
i dont like the ruff stuff ones because of the bolt hole in the center of the span. i think they are going to be prone to tear ing much like the early disk brackets did. skys are thick in that area.
i have sky's and would buy them again even though they are more$$$ i got mine in about 4 days. |

Re: 14 bolt disc conversion
Should be able to get them at any auto parts store. You just need to get 3/4 front rotors. 73-87 should work.
