Fly Wheel Bolts

im changing my fly wheel. ok i have the trani pulled back a couple of inches,im tryin to bust the fly wheel bolts loose with a wrench or two. im tryin to avoid dropping the transmission all the way. these bolts will not bust loose, i have tried a cheater on the wrench and broke the wrench, i have held the wrench and hit it with a 2 pound hammer. they will not give. any ideas of getting them loose without dropping the trani?

left is loose right? well does the 12 point 6 point wrench have anything to do with it?

I always use an impact to loosen them, but you may want to try a section of pipe or jack handle on the end of your cheater bar to give you more leverage and torque. Just don't get too carried away and break something. Chances are your not going to get them loose with just a hand wrench.

I use 12 point bolts. What brand was the wrench? You need a solid name brand wrench. If the bolts has a 12 point bolt, use a 12 point wrench. Otherwise you risk stripping the bolt. If you strip it, it's a whole can of worms then!!!

ok i opened that can of worms yoy was talking about. i got all but one bolt out and i rounded it bad. i have tried the irwin sockets and it didnt help. any ideas on this

Try putting a bolt on each side of the one you have rounded off.. then torque those two bolts.

Try hitting an edge of the stripped bolt with a chisel in a loosening direction.

If that doenst break it loose weld a cheap junky socket onto it ive had to weld sockets on many of stripped fasteners.

use a "gator grip" on the stripped bolt...or you can drill out the stripped head bolt (using a small bit, and dont go alllllll the way in the bolt, just the head) and use an easy out screw remover bit...

thats how I usually get em!

well guys thanks for all the replys. thanks alot i got my fly whhel out and i noticed no cracks, i put my new one on and i new what was going to happen, thats right i spun a rod bearing, but i wished it would have been a cracked fly wheel.

So how did you take off the bolt? Did you use 12 point replacements?

well after i finished getting mad, i got mad again and beat and bent the heck out of it so bad it finally broke loose, then when i got it out i looked over it and over and after examining my bent beat up fly wheel for cracks that i could not find, i new i did somethin worse like spun a rod bearing, so i put my new fly wheel on and sure enouph knock knock knock, i guess i dont have my ear for sounds yet. but anyway thanks for all the great tips.

Have you checked your fuel pump? If they get worn and loose on the pump arm, there is a knocking noise that sounds a lot like a rod bearing. Try that before you go to deep into the motor.

my truck has a electric fuel pump in the tank, it is a 86 that i made tbi. when you give it gas the knocking goes away then when it comes back down to idle it knocks again.

That kind of eliminates that part then. OUCH
