700r4 and a 205

will a 205 case work with a 700r4 tranny with a thm 350 adapter and are 700r4s from diesel trucks any better or different than any others other than the converters

Advanced Adapters (AA) makes an output shaft that makes your 700r4 look like the back of a th350 out of a 4x4. The bolt pattern on the case is the same, you just need an output shaft to mate right with your adapter. Buy the output shaft from summit (they are cheaper than from AA), take it and your case to a tranny guy that knows what he is doing, have him rebuild it while he has it apart.

The 700r4 is almost 2 inches longer than the th350. You can move the transfer case back 2 inches and have work done on both driveshafts or move the engine forward the amount required.

After reading about other's swaps, I think I'll move the engine forward as there is more than enough room if your V8 is in the factory 4x4 position.

My 700r4 has been on the shop floor for a couple of years waiting for me to get motivated, and come up with some cash.

I believe the 700s that came behind diesels also had a different pump.

I believe the bad rap 700s got was from the early models. They were weak. GM addressed the issue and fixed the problem. Then there are folks who tow in overdrive. That is not a good idea.

Where in NW Wisconsin are you? There are some 67-72s around. I missed my big chance. The very week I bought my current boat a guy said he'd sell me his '69 3/4 ton 4x4 with 40,xxx miles on it original. I had to pass as I wanted to stay married. Then I moved out of that neighborhood. I went back to maybe see if I could buy it again but his little lake cabin is gone, replaced by a McMansion. Back when he offered he said I'd have to come up with $2k. $2k for a 40k mile original truck. There is another one close by that looks like it has spent its entire life in a garage.

What he said. I have a 700r4 and a 205 in my 'burb. Had to get the 'special' output shaft to make it work.

At little word of advice... while you have it all out, change the seals in the coupler that goes between the tranny and the t-case. I didn't change mine, and now my t-case is full of ATF. Another project that could have been avoided by a few minutes worth of work while I already had it out!

ckhd, Thanks for posting that. I usually remind folks to do that when this stuff is apart. The seals are cheap and easy to install when everything is apart. The oil seals in the adapter are what keep the tranny fluid in the tranny and the gear oil in the t-case. You don't want to do this job twice.
