Question BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

I have a 454 BBC. Nothing fancy just straight forward and stock. I use the factory manifolds as well. Just wondering what pipe size, and muffler combo you all find works the best? I want all the throat sound, but dont want to be a kid again, and it must breathe well.

I have 2 1/2 with raptors, the holley flow tech brand. Sounds ok not real loud, not as throaty as I have on my 72(has flo pros witha 350). price was the deciding factor when I did the bigblock.

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

2-1/2'' pipes off the cast iron manifolds into a flowmaster Y pipe then into a single 3'' muffler and pipe. That is more than what is needed for a stock big block. That is what i had put on my longhorn. My 68 GMC has a 396 in it. The previous owner had headers put on it with dual 2 1/2'' and the stock air cleaner with the 1 1/2'' intake for the snorkle--go figure. I'll be changing that when I convert to 4wd

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

hooker comp full headers
18" of 3"
3" flowmaster knock offs
3' of 3" pipe.

the hookers are not a good idea if you have a lowerd truck,, they hang completely below the frame.

Sanderson 3/4 length Chevelle headers (1 7/8 primaries; 3" collector) w/3" pipe to Loback mufflers (24" case; 3" in/out) & all the way to the rear axle.

Nothing hangs below the frame rails & all bends are mandrel bends. Sorry.... no pics.

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

I like the idea kwmech has; elegant solution, no foo-foo. I am running a mild 427 with full-length Hedmans, H-pipe, 2 1/2 to the turbo mufflers, 2 1/4 tailpipes staight out the back. It was the same exhaust I had when I ran a mild 350. Not really ideal for either one for putting around on the street, but not too loud and not losing much if anything on the top, just some on the bottom. Like carburetors, I really think most people lose performance by going too big for how they really use their truck.

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

I have a 454 with a Comp Magnum 550 lift/236@.050 duration cam, headers of unknown brand, and 2.5" pipes back to Flowmasters. From there I think it goes to 2.25" pipes and into 4" chambered extensions out the back. No X or H pipe. I love the way it sounds. The headers are not "shorties" and have either 1-5/8" or 1-3/4" primaries which I consider to be a little small for my application. I have both a 1 meg and a 5 meg movie of it either of which I'll email to you if you'd like to listen.

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

ceramic big tube long headers using stock manifold gaskets then dual 2.5 all the way out to the back ..I have stocktype Midas mufflers which are nice and quiet at normal rpms ..the kick is electric cutouts from badlanz just behind the headers .. they make this 396 sound like somthing you dont even want to be close to raspy nasty noise on demand ..LOL

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

I'm running Dynomax Blackjacks designed for the Truck, they are 1 3/4" Primaries and 3" collectors, Running 2 1/2" Pipes all the way back, I had the muffler shop put on a Balance pipe, but I'm not sure if it helps since its back behind the Trans . I'm using Walker Mufflers.

Its pretty Mellow at Idle and around town (still has that nice rumble, but once you get into the throttle it opens up and sounds really wicked, not overly loud, just a really vicious note.

Of course that was with a fairly mild Comp Cams (in the .485 lift range). The New Cam is a .585lift Roller unit... so I am sure that will change the sound dynamic.

I'm almost certain that Dual 3" would be overkill and kill some Low-end (and daddy loves Torque).

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

I dont think open exhaust hurts chevy v8's. They do like to breathe. The other brand x junk, seems to need back preasure, but not chevy. Even stock at the drag strip with headers, they run well.

Re: BBC guys: What exhaust do you have?

I have turbo's and 2 1/2 in. with headers on my 1970 SS Nova. I like the sound. Kind of a rumble. It will vibrate the covers on most gas stations. 377 stroker BTW [stock bore].
