That damned dipstick tube!

Does anyone have any tricks for keeping the dipstick tube from pulling out?

Room Temperature Vulcanized sealant... slap it on the end that goes into the oil pan, then reinsert it (best if done from under the truck...). then coat over the dipstick and receptacle (only at that end) let set for 4+ hours.,.,.and viola! no more leak, and it stays in place... works for cracked water pumps too...

Re: That damned dipstick tube!

The tube is a press type fit into the engine block, If yours is loose it would be best to replace it with a new one.
They are not very expensive.

OK, thanks guys! I'll try the RTV first, then if I have to I'll replace it.

Re: That damned dipstick tube!

All else fails, have someone braze a little thin brass onto the tube end and then with the extra metal insert it ito the hole.

Re: That damned dipstick tube!

A short-term fix is to take it out and tap the bottom into a slightly oval shape that becomes a press-fit into the block.

If you have a double-flaring tool, you might be able to use it to barely upset the bottom so it fits tighter.
