Mounting bed with no floor

It's been a few years since I removed the bed from my truck and I'm finally ready to re-install it... well, minus the wood floor (cause I'm itching to drive it!) Can someone sell me if the wood runs between the bedsides (fleetside) and the mounts on the cross sills.
Thanks,
Tony

Yes the wood runs from bedside to bedside, and bolts to the cross sills.

Re: Mounting bed with no floor

So can I just bolt the bedsides directly to the cross sills or do I have to shim it 3/4" or so (where the wood would normally go) to get the bed to sit at the right height?

Re: Mounting bed with no floor

You will need to shim it 3/4 to allow for the wood.

Ahh.. what do you plan to use for shimming it? I will need to do this also.

I would get some 1x4's, and bolt them to the cross sills that way it would pick it up to the level you need. Don't use pressure treated lumber because the new chemicals in the wood eats through metal.

Re: Mounting bed with no floor

I ended up buying some 3/4" steel square tube - cut it to length and drilled some holes - seems to fit perfect and added support across the cross sills.

Re: Mounting bed with no floor

What do you mean by added support across the cross sills? Can you send pics of how you did it? Thanks.

Re: Mounting bed with no floor

The bedsides mount to the cross sills at 3 points and then to the rear cross sill (shortbed). I bolted the bedside mounting flanges to the square tube so it rests across 2 cross sills so all the weight of the bedsides isn't being supported by just the mounting flange at each cross sill. Basically takes the place of the wood that would normally support it - probably overkill, but it was cheap and easy insurance. I'll try to snap a few pics tonight.

Re: Mounting bed with no floor

I just finished repairing the bedside flanges. When I bought my truck it had no bed or shims and the stress at the cross sills caused them to rip.

How'd you repair them? I've got a few rusted areas on the flange.

I am in the process of replacing bed flanges also, here is another source

http://www.horkeyswoodandparts.com

enter the site and on the left hand side choose "Chevy", it will come up with a list of subcatagories, the second on the left is "Boxsides" and within this group you will find the "Fleetside Repair Angles"
