i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

ok yall i found a guy that wants to trade me a 1984 GMC 3/4 ton truck for my 66 truck plus $1000. i would really hate to see my truck go but i need something thats a little more dependable because my truck is my only vehicle. what i wanted to know is do you think its worth it? the 84 has 86000 miles on it. it has a 350/TH400. fair body. no smoke or knocks. my 66 has about 10000 on a rebuilt engine but was sitting for years. i have about $2000 into my truck. i told him i could do maybe $500 extra on the deal. im still waiting for him to get back to me. what do you guys think? any advice would be helpful. i know i could sell my truck for $2000 easy. lemme know.
thanks,
John

Re: i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

I think you should save up some money and buy yourself something else so you can keep the truck. There is a reason why this guy wants to trade his "dependable" truck for yours!

One is going to nickel & dime you just like the other will. I think you should keep what you have. He must be having problems with it.

Take your $500 and scrape up a little more and get a beater car to drive, take the money you save on gas and fix your truck up.

Re: i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

Ya, im with them. They style i support is have one, or a few, project vehicles, and having one or more dependable daily drivers (so you dont have to be the same every day) thats just my .02, Plus the 73-87s can be worth alot and at the same time go for 300, i bought my buddys 84 lwb for 300 cash and drove it home. I also picked up my 1977 pickup for 1350, thats a 87k mile truck when i bought it, and never had to replace anything other than the normal. if you want a dependable one, i suggest looking for an orignal (french locks on exhaust manifolds) truck with a heavy duty use 350 (non EGR) and then you have a good dependable motor, in a truck that can roast the tires, and a future restoration project. Im talking about the 73-78 trucks, 79 all but some 3/4and one tons had egr. I say this because i found an 82 with no EGR but passed on it, i regret that move. And 73-74s mayabe some 75s have a bad ammount of iron in their body or something so it causes them to rust out quicker, but a good 3/4 ton 73-78 will last forever if treated right, my dads 1973 Daily driver has a 350/4 speed, all orignal with the optional heavy duty 3/4 ton suspension and about 173k miles on it, and weve never had the valve covers off, or the intake. Heck his orignal alternator just went out a few months ago.

thats my input, find a good old farm truck for 500 and drive it.

Re: i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

84 Chevy 3/4 ton truck with a 350/400 will net you about 8 miles to the gal city or freeway.. Buy a beater like they said and keep the truck.. You will be sick if you trade.. Plus you would have a harder time selling the 84 for $2000 then your 66 for $2000...

Re: i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

A couple years ago I bought A Volvo for $500 off craigslist. It gets 35mpg and still runs strong and is vey reliable. I say look for a deal like this. As soon as you get rid of your truck you'll regret it.

Don't do it!! He should give you the 84 & $1000.00. You should enjoy your 66. I wish I could enjoy mine but it's not evan close to being done yet. Joe

Re: i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

keep the 66, it may require some regular maintenance but as long as you take the time to maintain it you will have a dependable truck. Plus if you do have issues, it's usually about 10,000 times easier to diagnois then with anything post 1980.

Re: i might be getting rid of my 66 truck.........

what i think im gonna do is get a panel truck. i can get one from a buddy for next to nothing. im gonna put another engine in it. nothing special, just a stock engine, maybe a newer V6 or V8 TBI or something. not sure yet. might just go to a junk yard and get a wrecked newer truck and just swap everything. just so i can have something dependable and more drivable so i can work on my truck at my leisure.
thanks,
John

glad to hear you are keeping the truck.

whats wrong with volvos? apparently you've never had a ride in 80's volvo with 20 pounds of boost and 300 hp. oh yeah, good gas mileage and reliability too.......

Nothing wrong with driving a volvo to save on gas $$$$$ I have owned 3 and it's the cheapest alternative when you are restoring your chevy truck. Not sure how well stocked the junkyard's are in your area....in Portland, Oregon you pretty much have yourt pick at all the parts you want at dirt cheap prices.
