67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
Can someone help with clarification on what was available off the production line from Chevy in the 4x4 67-72 1/2T trucks? I have a young man with a 71 1/2T Chevy and a impressive 396cid very competitive in the foresight so to speak. I know the 2wd trucks were available with 396, but unable to identify if available in the 4wd's. I have contacted Chevy customer service without prevail.

They did not put any big blocks in the 4x4 from 67-72. Gonna move this to where you can get more of a response.

Motors from the 250 6 cylinder to the 292 up to a 350 available through the 67-72 4wds.No big blocks stock in the 67-72 4wds,ever.350s after 69 in the 4wds and 327s were the biggest in the 67-68s (IIRC).There was always a 6 cylinder available though.

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
What kind of racing is the young man with the 71 1/2 ton doing?
Does the truck have to be stock for the class? If it does he's cheatin.

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
Definitely no big blocks in 4X4s. They were available in one ton 4X4s starting in about 1985, but never in a 3/4 ton 4X4 until the new IFS body style in 1988.

I've seen plenty of late 70's 3/4 ton Chevy's with 454's...but they were 2wd.

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
Thanks for all the input. I see that my hunch was correct. I am in search for documentation to support our findings. Does anyone have paper work to cover my tail? Our fire dept has a mud bog on 7/29, and I know he will return with the "71" "Shany Shaker".

"Mud Bogging" We are running in a 20' wide x 150' long mud pit with about 12"-20" of mud. They are timed with electronic lights. Fastest time or longest distance wins. Yes, he is running the "Street Class" which dictates all factory available from the production line.

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
So if big blocks never came in early 4x4 trucks, he is illeagal for the class??
Or does the motor just have to be stock.

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
Special K, I was refering to the motor being stock for the year motor. I know that there were no BB 4x4's. Sorry if i wasn't clear.
Back when i used to mud race in the EMRA we were allowed to run any motor as long as we could pull 14lbs of vacume. External bolt on's were allowed. Up to a 36" tire measured side to side.(some guys would run 38's and air them down. So they put a stop to that.) The truck had to be registered , inspected, and insured.

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
Tech Inspector,
I would call Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center back at 800-222-1020 and request a free 1971 C/K “Resto-Pack”, as the phone jockeys that answer the calls are not technically trained and are just contract employees that swing through a constant revolving door. There is no way they could take a stab at answering that question over the phone. The Resto-Packs are a thousand time over photo copy concoction of brochures, order guides, tech info, etc. It should have something in there about engine availability in each truck model. K10734 (short bed) and K10934 (long bed) are the model codes for ½ ton 4x4’s. I have a 1968 Resto Pack in front of me and it say’s 327 was the largest engine available in the 1968 K10 and K20. I know for a fact the largest you could get in a 1971 K10 or K20 was a 170 Net HP 350 but if you need supporting documentation, the CCAC Resto-Pack will be pretty much be your only option unless you find a Chevrolet dealer with a 36 year old order guide. Unfortunately, I cannot find the other Resto-Packs years I have stashed around here somewhere. The quality of info in each Resto-Packs vary depending on who put them to gether at the time so you might want to order a 1970 – 1972 guides. If you order a 1998 and 1999 C/K truck Resto Pack you will get one that I made when I worked at CCAC when it was still operated in-house by Chevrolet Motor Division. I also reworked many early 70’s El Camino and Truck Resto-Packs but I cannot remember if 1971 was one of them. BTW….Big blocks were first available in K20’s (4x4) in late 1978. But, Suburban did not receive a big block in the ¾ ton 4x4’s until 1992 when the new GMT400 platform was introduced. Hard to believe but it is true!

Re: 67-72 motors available 4x4 Chevys Trucks
Thanks a bunch for the info on the brochures. I found what I needed to settle the dispute. I am sorry for the ole boy, he lost. No Points, No Money. I will have to give it to him, he put on a great show until now. He will move to the Hot Street class, engine swaps are allowed.
Thanks again, big help |

Is this the guy.
I suspect all the bigblock ford guys are whining about the bigblock chevy smocking them on the track. LOL!! Was there no special order i always thought if your willing to wait for it that they would build it as ordered. Ed |
