truck wont start - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

heres the story, its a 69 chevy with a 350/th350, running a 650cfm holly. so i ran out of gas and then the truck wouldnt run without being on the gas. Towed it home and checked to see if the carb was getting gas, it was but it wouldnt idle. so i figured the float was stuck...long story short i have replaced plugs, wires, and fixed the float on the carb. now it wont even start, when i crank it i hear a horrible noise and it feels like it seizes up. the fan still spins so i know its not locked up but what could the noise be comming from? It almost sounds like its comming from the bottom half of the engine. i dont know to much about engines but to me it sounds like something is stopping the crank shaft from spinning. hopefully i am wrong.
sorry for the long post and bad description but hopefully someone can shed some light for me.

have you checked your oil level recently??

while that sounds stupid, you may have flooded the hell outta it and it would be down in the oil, creating a very high level on the stick.

Sounds like it's seizing while trying to start? Are you sure you ran out of gas? Maybe a slipped timing chain or the timing is way out.

Take your plugs back out and crank it. Your carb is probably still flooding the cylinders with raw gas.

Thanks for the replies. i check my oil on a regular basis and never let it get low. I will try cranking it with the spark plugs out tommorow and see what happens. Thanks again for the advice. i cant count how many times this board has helped me out with the ol' girl.

I think LonghornMan was suggesting you check your oil to see if it diluted with gasoline.

before pulling the plugs, disconnect the coil wire and see if it helps. If it does, check you firing order. If you've got them really screwed up, it's firing out of time and making it crank hard.
